  • Pearl Jam are punk influenced classic rock with an undertone of 1970s heavy metal.

This is the correct answer. Hendrix meets the Ramones meets Zeppelin/Sabbath.
  • Pearl Jam are unmistakenly a hard rock band. Saying otherwise is like saying they're Bluegrass just because they have a couple of Ukelele songs. Even the heaviest metal bands have a minority of soft tunes.

They are very diversified in the type of music they play. Great songs in each style.

I think of them as classic rock. I don't like it when I down load PJ into my music player and it automatically comes up Rock/Pop. I hate pop so I remove that part.

They are clearly alternative rock. I get pissed when I see them under "popular" in our premier cd store, JB Hi-fi. They used to file them under alternative rock, now they're lumped under popular. Sure they are popular, but their proper classification is alternative rock, and yeah they're classic rock also.

I've always found that strange aswell. I've always considered them either grunge (the punk inspired classic rock that was mentioned earlier) or just classic rock.
The radio station i listen to (planet rock) will play a PJ song at least once a week (in the uk that's pretty damn good). They also play Soundgarden and have started playing Oasis which took me by surprise!

It's just "Rock n' Roll" to me. Trying to pin them down under one label is difficult because they have so many songs that cross lines. Their influences are across the board and you can hear those influences in their music. As far as classic rock goes, that to me is a term that has more to do with the age of the music (and the artist to some degree). When it comes to radio these days, most of the rock stations are playing it safe and including everything on their playlists from older classic rock to newer modern stuff. It's getting harder to find stations on terrestrial radio that cater to a specific form of rock music, especially the more alternative and experimental stuff.

I was getting my Ed poster framed yesterday at Hobby Lobby and a lady standing next to us said..."Who is that?" I said "Eddie Vedder from pearl jam", and another lady said "It is a classic rock band." It caught me off guard. I remember listening to classic rock stations all my life with...The Beatles and Zeppelin and Dylan..and then they started playing U2 and more recently The Black Crowes. I feel kind of old now...thinking that these stations will be playing Pearl Jam soon. I am not sure that I am ready for this realization that so much time has passed. I am almost 30...but, vividly remember how it felt the first time I heard PJ..and how it felt to be 13 years old in 93..Is it really time for a Pearl Jam song introduction on a classic rock station to say "Here is a blast from the past"...?

I would go with Alternative Rock myself for the label.

Regarding the Classic rock station thing. I've been waiting for this for a while. I remember in high school (early 90's) Zeppelin, Who, Floyd etc. . . was classic rock. But in reality, Zeppelin was only 10 years past their last album. The Who still toured as did the Stones, Dead, etc . .

I kinda figured high school kids might call PJ Classic rock pretty soon.

PJ are an orthodox-sounding rock band. Though their style has been drawn from classic rock there's a drama lacking from the 'hits' compared to say the Who and LedZep. The standard rock listener will find some of the songs (especially the punkier ones) overwrought and blustery which isn't in keeping with the 'classic' tag. Yet they can alter their tempo and apply some lateral thought to an extent that those bands can't.

PJ will be remembered as a cult band.
