I just heard that with headphones! I've heard that sound for years and it never registered to me what it meant. I wonder why they included that?

I think it was inspired by the Binaural recording technique. A lot of weird uses of it in that song, coin dropping ect... They were probably stoned or smoking when doing some recording and jsut threw it in there. Sounds pretty cool to me, and fits the mood of the song for sure.
