if you mean ditching the fat cat soul sucking record companies, striking out on their own and then getting a deal to get into target and independent record stores, then no they didn't bend over.

No. But when Roger Daltry sings My Generation, its kinda weird, isn't it? "Hope I die before i get old?" . . . it affected Ed to the point where he did change the lyric, in 06, at least, to "delight in the truth" instead of "in our youth".

But all in all someone here said it was about societal rage and what not. I agree. Even though its a youth anthem, its also an anthem about angst, personal and societal . . . so after much thought, INDEED, play Leash forever and ever.

On a related note - I've never heard Leash in person, only on boots, and the last one I remember hearing it on was one of the Gorge shows from a few years back where Ed substituted the word "lucky" for the F word throughout, I think? Is he still doing that when they play it now?

I love that song, always have. I'd love to hear it just once when I saw them! I do relate the song to early PJ, or younger PJ, but that doesn't mean I think there's anything wrong with them playing it from time to time. I think it's good that they bust it out every now and then.

I really don't care if they play it next year in Hungary - my country is infamous for lack of English/any foreign language skills, so noone would really give a damn about it;)

I'd love to see Ed have his mandatory crack at speaking the local language in Hungary. And in the Basque country. Love him for trying, god knows I never have any idea what any of this is about, but it sure is amusing to watch.

Yet Ed still sings the "we are young" part ... I think he changed "youth" to "truth," not because he is too old to sing it the original way, but because the people he was singing it to and about -- the Bush Administration -- were all a bunch of lying liars who lie.

Frankly, I wish they'd stop playing Leash because I've seen it at four of my past six shows. There's really no other good reason.

You know, middle aged men can still conjure up a pissed off vibe and put it into song. Trust me, I'm in my 40's (far from rich, though) and I can still get get in touch with my inner young man angst! :twisted:

On a side note, when will people get off of the "old" vs "new" Pearl Jam? Better catch a ride in a time machine if all you can do is post clips (good as they might be) of the band's early 90's gigs. :roll:

while i understand that ed isn't a serial killer (once) or a woman settling (betterman) i still find the emotion that comes from a song like Leash to be gone when they perform it. the song was written from a young and angry perspective by a young and angry man. the rage and confusion about life and the world. it's a big "fuck you" to the world.

i personally don't feel like the tap into that energy any more when they play it. it sounds good. they still rip the shit out of the song..but there's something lacking.
