I keep coming back to Kim Thayil's solo in Like Suicide, absolutely sublime.

Comfortably Numb's is amazing too, and I'm sure some Smashing Pumpkins would feature somewhere in my top ten.

    There's loads !
My no. 1 is definitly Your Savior by Temple of The Dog.
And of course, Alive is briliant.
Mike is definitly good at what he does.

Driving Nowhere by Helmet is very good as well, it's different because of the distorted guitar, but it's without a doubt a great solo.
I just want to scream, Hello!
  • the greatest solo of all time, in fact the high point of guitar in human history, is Jimi Hendrix's Machine Gun solo. Its in this song, and during this solo, you have to bow down and say, Jimi is not human, and there will never be another like him, ever. period.

The moaning guitar in CCR's You Put a Spell on Me. Is another great one.

    Alive
    Immortality
    Free Bird
    Comfortably Numb
    Light My Fire
I Heard It Through the Grape Vine (ccr)
    Like A Hurricane
Do You Feel Like We Do
    Stranglehold

Maybe this will clarify for people what I look for in my PJ and why I'm sick of the crappy 3-minute punk songs and yearning for more epic tunes like Immortality and Alive and Not For You ;) Give me a nice, arena rock showstopper, any day of the week.

  • Clapton's solo(s) in Have You Ever Loved a Woman on Derek and the Dominos "Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs". He makes you feel the passion, hurt, and longing for Patti Harrison in that song.

Probably Trey Anastasio's solo in Theme From The Bottom from Dayton, OH 12/7/97. I've heard it a million times, but I still get chills...

As for studio solos, probably Comfortably Numb. Easily the most cliche answer after Stairway, but my God is it perfect....

  • only one other person besides me has mentioned hendrix? What the hell is wrong with you people?

And say what you want about Stairway to Heaven being overplayed or overhyped, but Page's solo certainly is mindblowing in that song.

Yeah I agree about Stairway, amazing stuff, and Hendrix is kind of a given, not sure which of his is my favourite. For me it's less about complexity and technical stuff, as it is about how perfectly it fits the song.
  • My favorite Mike McCready live solo is Porch from 3/5/98 Australia.
