yes this is what they actually mean. someone told me 2 years ago at a nyc meetup as to why pearl jam are named pearl jam. its subtle way to honor andy wood/mlb.
Maybe that's the silly part. It's almost like they thought they were never going to get this big and was like fuck it lets call ourselves cum.

At this point, does it really matter what we think? That ship has long since sailed.
Although I wouldn't mind if they re-named themselves after an overrated Nets guard again. Maybe they could call themselves "Vince Carter."everybody wants the most they can possibly get

hmmm. Metallica? seriously, you think that's an example of a GREAT band name? and 311? what is that, an area code? and I love, love, love, smashing pumpkins - but that's a really cheesy band name.
PEARL JAM IS PERFECT IN EVERY WAY.

what you're calling classic band names you're confusing with classic bands music. Yes the doors, led zep etc. made great music but that doesn't mean that their name is "classic" it's just your opinion...jesus this thread is dumb...“May you live to be 100 and may the last voice you hear be mine.” - Frank Sinatra0 -

i was exaggerating a bit, hence the smiley face. but i have always like the name Pearl Jam, even back before I became a diehard. I didn't really get hooked big time until Vitalogy came out - but even before that I thought PJ was a cool rock band name. i don't know, never struck me as anything to be embarrassed about, that's for sure.
i think the doors, zeppelin, 3 dog night are great band names. I think The Who is one of the absolute best band names. Nirvana is an amazing band name. Lots of great ones, some really stupid ones. like i have never liked calling your band by your name. ie, "The Dave Mathews Band" I mean, come on how uncreative can you get? At least do something like Neil Young AND Crazyhorse or Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band. Don't just call yourself the freaking My First Name My Last Name Band. super boring and uninspiring.0 -
