Yeah, give the record some time. I said the same thing about BInaural when it came out... Now it's my least favorite. Said the same thing about Riot Act, then settled down a bit afterwords (I still love it for what it is). I chilled out with Avocado and never really jumped the gun on it. I consider it to be a very solid piece of work with some classic songs.
I'll say that Backspacer is their best since Yield, easily. However, we need to sit with this album for a while, see the songs live... it needs to stand the test of time. Evaluate it in a year or two and see if you still feel the same way.
I think this is their most accessible, inviting album since Yield. I am always super-excited to hear anything new from them, but this one feels like a little more.
I will reserve judgment on ranking this, but I can confidently say it's immediately above Riot Act and No Code...so, it's got that going for it, which is nice.
"Darkness comes in waves, tell me, why invite it to stay?"

ive been listening to it on repeat and the melodies are just incredible, so poppy and vedders lyrics balance so well with the melodies, cant wait to hear these live, thats going to be really interesting....
wait for the honeymoon to be over and then let us know where it ranks on your PJ list....
Good call. I love the album about as much as the next guy, but I'm not going to say it's their best ever.

I don't know why fans try to tell other fans what their favorite record should be. Just let the people enjoy the music. At least they're listening to it. I'm glad to see some excitement and I'm certainly not gonna try to prove to somebody that Vitalogy is better than Yield or whatever. It's a waste of time.
Anyway, Backspacer is a good record. Looking forward to hearing all of it played live. I don't see a lot of throw aways on this one. I feel like they'll all be in regular rotation at the shows.

I agree completely with every word said here. At least we can all come to a consensus on one thing: We love Pearl Jam. That should really be enough.
I feel as if I should tell you not to be too hasty but, what the hell, Backspacer is without question awesome. It certainly does showcase Pearl Jam at their best. I would gladly lobby for the band to dedicate 37 min. of whatever concert I attend, to play this album in its entirety. And I know if I was an eccentric billionare, right now I would be flying around in my private jet, dropping a thousand Backspacer albums from the sky (attached with tiny parachutes of course) for those uninformed to realize what great rock music really sounds like.

Above No Code. Holy Hell. That's bold, man. Bold.

Have you never listened to no code? Yield? Binaural? Vs.? Ten? Vitalogy?
I think he's only listened to them 9x.
True. Saying that backspacer is better than no code proves that ignorance isn't always bliss.
i like how you left out riot act and self titled. well done.
well I don't know if it's at the bottom of the discography yet, but it's slowly getting there. Nothing on backspacer compares to thumbing my way.
harsh but true. the only song i really can i say LIKE off riot act is can't keep (the uke verison is fun as hell too).
it's only been a few days, but backspacer is better than riot act and self titled... and i think that's where it ends.
but each their own.
