I'm seeing a lot of mixed feelings about this song. Some saying it's the worst on the album.

What gives? I think the song is really fucking cool. The way Ed phrases the lines and sings the song is really different and awesome to me.

I'm not a big fan of their punkier numbers, but they made this interesting with the uber cool arrangement. Has the classic left turns that have been missing from PJ for awhile.
  • Ohhhh, Johnny loves his Women!
Straight down the center for a hot chicken dinner!
  • I like it. At least it stands out.

  • I think the song is really good. Not only is it funky like something they might have wrote years ago. And the vocal style is so different, it's impressive to see another side of Ed, yet again.

Johnny Guitar is catchy, cool and quick. I just don't understand why fans expect Rapture whenever PJ releases an album. I hated "Parachutes" and "Help, Help" in the past. But I'm sure those songs had more significance to others more than me.

  • The song is even better when you realize Ed wrote the lyrics about this album artwork.

In his exhaustively researched book Dream Boogie: The Triumph of Sam Cooke (2005), the author claims that Watson was an actual pimp, as well as a performer. Watson himself, however, reportedly felt "ambivalent" about prostituting women, even though it "paid better" than music.

  • i think i hate it because i went into it expecting it to be a song heavy on mike's side, like another ledbetter number. i just dont think mike gets enough love anymore.
In July 2007 Densmore said that he would not rejoin The Doors unless it was fronted by Eddie Vedder. Densmore says, "I play with Jim. If there's someone of that level, OK. I'm not gonna join them with Ian. That's not to diss Ian, he's a good singer - but he's no Jim Morrison. Eddie Vedder? My God, there's a singer."

Boy meets girl, really? The whole pimp thing was cool though. Haha.

I don't care to much for the song, but I do really like the story in it. Its pretty awesome that Ed came up with this whole tale from the pic on the album cover.

Hear hear! At first, i thought the lyrics were that way because of Ed trying to fit them to the beat...and then I noticed that the beat is pretty straight but accentuated. It's very odd and I like it. It's tied for my favorite song on the album next to Gonna See My Friend and Unthought Known. The band shines on these songs. Poppy or not, this album is amazing and I like it.

How can someone hate this song with a lyric like this?

"With a leg under a red dress i wish i could see
further north a warmth alive and lingering"

Now when has Ed ever been so humorous and light hearted with his lyrics, yet it is hugely descriptive and has loads of personality... pure brilliance, one of the best tunes on the record, definitely!
    JUST PLAY THE F***ING NOTE!!!
  • I like Johnny Guitar. It's taking me a little more time to like Supersonic. For some reason, I just can't get into that one. I'm sure if I listen to it more it'll probably grow on me...
  • I appreciate what they tried to do here and I like the concept behind the album cover in the bathroom and what not...With that being said...

Song just aint doing it...In fact Backspacer was almost the first album in the catalouge where I dont skip a song...But Johnny Guitar stands in the way. Its too bad because it has a kick ass name and really makess you wanna hear it...Then comes the dissappointment.
  • Far and away, my favorite song on the record... I just with they repeated the hell out of the last chorus at the end... It goes by took quick.... I think once people get that last tag line stuck in there head (took me about a week), they will fall in love with this one...

    Not a fan.
  • this definitely seems to be settling in as a 'love it or hate it" song amongst the fans. not sure why. i fucking love this song. i think its very interesting musically, especially eds phrasing. the lyrics are light and silly but actually tell a very heartfelt story. i think it's incredibly interesting all around. 4th best on the album for me i think, behind amongst the waves, unthought known, and force of nature.
