I'm liking Speed of Sound.....

the more I listen to it. It's VERY produced, but damn, Brendan O'Brien can produce it and not ruin it as much as Gone was ruined on the last album. If anything, I think -- sigh -- The End is the weak link on this album........

why?
The production. Those tiny soundbursts u hear at certain points throughout the song representing the actual speed of sound make for poignant moments.
The song is sweet all the way through and at times, it rocks with urgency.
Not that that's necessarily a terrible thing, I guess. But the best song on this album can't sound like something the Phantom would be singing at the Opera.
The lyrics (which are stellar) save this song from being schlocky. Overall, I put it somewhere in the lower middle of the Backspacer songs.
for the least they could possibly do
