This isn't an attack just trying to see things from Pearl Jams angle. They've said that they did this thing with Target under the terms that 800 or so members of the Coalition of Independent Music Stores could also sell Backspacer. But all of Pearl Jam's albums when they came out I could always buy at a local independent music store. So I don't understand this move. That was never an issue. Since they're not with a label couldn't they just release their album to everyone? i'm trying to figure out how to defend them. I just don't like seeing Targets logo in their music video on tv. I remember that documentary on Grunge: Hype! and Vedder talking about how lame it would be to see some car commercial with some car named after some Grunge reference. Like if their was a car called the Evenflow XL100 or some shit. (He didn't say that but I think that was his point).

pick one of the many recent interviews out there and read it, the band explains why they did what they did better than any of us could “May you live to be 100 and may the last voice you hear be mine.” - Frank Sinatra0 -
its simple
500,000 people wont pay for this record
so they seek out a deal that makes them some money
same with the increased ticket prices
ultimately, its to recover money lost through illegal copying and trading of the music
At least thats what I think, but I have no facts upon which to base that opinion.0 -
From my understanding is this.. as an artist releasing something on your own, you have to set everything up yourself. Doing it this way they only have to deal with three areas for distribution.. Target, I-Tunes, and the indie stores (which I believe that there is a group or comity with a list of these stores. correct me if I'm wrong.) Rather that setting something up with best buy, wallie world, etc... So in the long run it's easier on them.
They could of been like AC/DC & done just the Wal-Mart thing & forgotten about the ma & pa shops.
I hope this makes sense.San Francisco, California 08-28-2009

At least thats what I think, but I have no facts upon which to base that opinion.
A lot of bands don't have 500,000 people buying their records, and they are still making money without jacking up ticket prices or making deals with Target. They did this deal to make money, and I've got nothing against Pearl Jam making a lot of money, they're a great band they deserve it, but to think they did this Target for anything other than money is delusional."If my thoughts, dreams, could be seen, they'd probably put my head, in a guillotine, but it's alright ma, it's life and life only."0 -

I agree but it's nice to see the band getting $5 a disc (which is an incredible deal, nobody gets that!) and the fat cat record companies getting absolutely fucking nothing from this album...love it!“May you live to be 100 and may the last voice you hear be mine.” - Frank Sinatra0 -

but you are right, there are a lot of bands that seem to do just fine without the retail tie ins and with keeping ticket prices lower than pj (e.g. MMJ and Wilco)0 -

It did. Man didn't expect to instantly get this many responses. One second after I posted and people are replying. Nice little network we got going on here.0 -
So what I got from that is since they don't have Sony to do all this they decided to just go with Target, itunes, ring tones and indie stores to hanlde. Rather than having to deal with Target, Best Buy, Wal Mart, Kmart (they still around?) Caldor etc altogether.0

What i find funny is that stuff like this actually bothers people

well it's understandable when you have had a band for years that is so anti corporation/establishment making a deal like this with Target. Hell even Ed said in a recent interview that he "understood" that fans would probably be confused about it. I don't blame them though, if this is what it takes to make a record of Backspacer's quality then by all means do whatever you must!“May you live to be 100 and may the last voice you hear be mine.” - Frank Sinatra0 -

That would be correct.
