As they grow so do we...That is why we love them so ;)
Appreciation is a wonderful thing: It makes what is excellent in others belong to us as well.... (Voltaire)
  • i hope this doesn't rain on your parade, cause i think it's great that Pearl Jam has been there for you every moment of their careers...

but i think ed write his lyrics in a more generalized manner, especially lately. You can put most of his lyrics to virtually any life situation. I think that's why PJ is so great cause their music relates to everyone so well, some songs even relate to me in multiple ways (like Come Back for instance, my father passed away and when my girlfriend and i left for separate colleges this song has been important to me)

I'd think you can attribute it to the attention and care that eV puts into his craft. The guy really has a gift. When you write something that, from front-to-back, is general, but so well written that it can be clearly interpreted in multiple ways... well... that doesn't happen by accident.

The guy has a gift, as they all do. Lyricists are held to a different standard though, I think.

    You are so right.

I had posted a thread about each album and you--meaning what you were doing in LIFE.

Like you this is why I have and always will love PJ--they grew with me and helped me grow.

There is so much love and hope in Backspacer and that clearly comes from EV's life with 2 kids.

"Love ain't love until you feel it
Up riding high amongst the waves"

If you have kids, you are very lucky, and relating to this song isn't a hard thing to do.

I remember my son (4 now) really puking for the 1st time about 1.5 years ago.

We were laying in bed and I knew he wasn't feeling well he sat up and vomited, I stuck my hands out and caught most of it, and the only thought I had was how can I make things better for him, how can I take the pain away, I want him to know it's OK and everything will be fine, that's love.
  • The strength of a lyric, which I at a given time i interpreted in a very postitive way

    Rearviewmirror...

    I took a drive today
    Time to emancipate
I guess it was the beatings... made me wise
But I'm not about to give thanks, or apologize
I couldn't breathe, holdin' me down
Hand on my face, pushed to the ground
    Enmity gauged, united by fear
Forced to endure what I could not forgive...

    I seem to look away
    Wounds in the mirror waved
It wasn't my surface... most defiled
Head at your feet, fool to your crown
Fist on my plate, swallowed it down
    Enmity gauged, united by fear
Tried to endure what I could not forgive

    Saw things
    Clearer
    Once you, were in my...
    Rearviewmirror...

I gather speed from you fucking with me
Once and for all I'm far away
I hardly believe, finally the shades...are raised...

    Saw things so much clearer
    (Once you, once you)
    Rearviewmirror...

This saved my life - seriously. Every word of it fit into my life at the time when I things felt very were very bad and hearing it at a very critical moment changed my entire life. I am now 40, have a family of my own and live in a beautiful part of the work and control my own destiny. Thank you Pearl Jam

agree 100% as songwriter myself, i can say that its not the easiest thing to do, writing in general terms that is. I have to make it personal, but yet easy for others to take as thier own. it can be difficult at times.

wish i could do it half as good as EV.

anyway, i agree with what OP said, its like they see into our lives and write just for us. lol :D
    Peace, Love.

I'm in my 40's and first saw Pearl Jam in the 90's. I even think that as I have gotten older, it almost means more to me now than when I was younger. It's like I have a different type of appreciation and I hear it differently than I used to. Sounds corny, but it's true.

It is no secret that generally people are at their happiest later in life. Pearl Jam is feeling it right now and this album speaks to me as someone in their late 30s, happily married with a couple of kids and a good job. This is the best time of my life and this record is perfect for me.

    You get it! Yes.
    Also...
"Holding Puke" would be a great name for a new PJ song.
    Hold On

Another life with kids moment hit me today while enjoying Amongst the Waves:

    "Remember back, the early days
When you were young, and less amazed
    Suddenly the channel changed
The first time you saw blood"

This too me is how we really don't appreciate life that much or take it for granted while young.

It all changes when you witness the birth (blood) of your kid. Life is anew, there is a real meaning to it.

I love this fuckin' ablum more and more with each play.

Like EV said in a recent interview, the songs on Backspacer are a bunch they will be playing for years to come.

    Thank you PJ.

Completely agree! Ed is an artist and collectively Pearl Jam is art in a way that none of them could be on their own, even though they are also able to make beautiful creations independently.

Their music is like any art that is so well done it is capable of speaking to and touching many different people. And they do reach my heart.

    You know what's funny?

I write for a living, political philosophy. Article upon article, chapter upon chapter, Ed always says it more beautifully, concisely, universally, artistically.

What the fuck... my dissertation is "unthought known," but it's 300 boring pages
... and the will to show I will always be better than before.
