Your first post is pretty poorly written, does your brain not allow you to type what you think? My question marks are for the sheer wonder at the sentiments found in your posts.

I mean, anybody with a Hoff avatar and openly argues that Matt Chamberlain was PJ's best drummer deserves to be called an idiot, right?

I kid.
...and I easily bated him into using "idiot" within 2 posts.
And I didn't say that Chamberlain was PJ's best drummer. I believe what I said was that Chamberlain was the most well rounded drummer for PJ. From Chamberlain's numerous bands, it's clear can play very fluidly and he is a happy-medium between Abbruzzese, Cameron, Krusen and Irons, but without the extreme polar opposite playing style that each of them had from each other. ...but I don't wanna hijack the OP's thread.ADD 5,200 to the post count you see, thank you.

This song....i picture a couple who were never married but had kids so they are still in contact with each other...they broke up because the guy fucked up...but deep inside they still love each other but are apprehensive to express or announce it...especially the woman.....and the man sits alone in his home..in the dark..he feels trapped by his regret...heart full of pain and sorrow to the point of contemplating suicide...if she only knew she could save him with the 3 words he longs to hear.
man this is some good weed!0 -
It seems to me about a man's life, to his death.
What were all those dreams we shared those many years ago,
What were all those plans we made, now left beside the road.
Behind us in the road.
(young couple making plans for many things, some of which didn't happen)
More than friends, I always pledge, ‘cuz friends they come and go,
People change as does everything, I wanted to grow old,
I just want to grow old.
("more than friends" = lovers/husband-wife; I just want to grow old = looking forward to growing old with her)
Slide on next to me, I’m just a human being,
I will take the blame, but just the same, this is not me, you see, believe,
I’m better than this – don’t leave me so close,
(he made a mistake, or they're going thru tough times, and is feeling vulnerable. "slide on next to me, I'm just a human being" = I know I made a mistake, but please be with me; "don't leave me so close" = though you're sitting with me, don't be so emotionally distant)
I’m buried beneath the stones,
I just want to hold on and know I’m worth your love,
and I, don’t think, there’s such a thing.
(he's overwhelmed by his position from his potential aforementioned mistake in the relationship, and he just wants to be loved, and know he's worth her love, though he doesn't believe he could ever attain "true" worth of her love)
It’s my fault now, I've been caught, a sickness in my bones.
How do you think it is to leave you here with the kids on your own,
Just don’t let me go.
("It's my fault now, i've been caught, a sickness in my bones" = I screwed up, and this illness is karma coming back around)
Help me see myself,
‘Cuz I can no longer tell,
(the sickness is getting worse, and he can no longer recognize himself)
Looking up from inside of the bottom of a well, it’s Hell,
(perhaps he's now medicated heavily or in a coma, and he's deep in a "well")
I yell, but no one hears before, I disappear, whisper in my ear.
Give me something to echo in my unknown future,
you see, my dear, the end, comes near, I’m here, but not much longer.
(he's scared and he's "yelling" inside, but since he's heavily medicated or in a coma or whatnot, no one can hear him. he's scared what death will be like, and he's about to die, and he's just hoping to have some words from her to comfort him before he disappears)
at the end of the song, in the last verse you hear a breath coming in, which is the last breath, and he dies.ADD 5,200 to the post count you see, thank you.

I heard he actually was inspired by the performances of Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling in "The Notebook" fame.

but hey we could both be wayyy wrong! it's still fun to try and decipher Ed's lyrics!0 -

Well since one of the other songs is called Johnny Guitar it's safe to say that the lost of his best friend is still on Eddie Vedders mind. A best friend who had prostate cancer and left many who loved him behind.I thought maybe this song was written for him but the line about leaving someone behind with the kids doesn't support that theory. Nahhhh....it's Ed's wishful/romantic thinking about his parents (which is kind of sweet, actually)...it's from his dad's perspective...
You can still think with MS, you're just in hell physcially....your mind is sharp, but you can't talk...etc, etc...be philanthropic0 -
Good weird song but I hate the way he sings "Slide"0

I guess after I heard it, I took it more as a kind of desperate attempt by a man who knows a relationship is probably over, but is desperately trying to keep the other person from actually leaving. Like listen, I know I fucked up and have been caught, I'll take the blaim, but I am just a human after all, can't you see if you just gave me another shot, I could try. I need you to help me see myself, cause I'm lost.all those paper plates......0

Maybe I'm just freaking out and making up stuff but I think I agree with the original post
Gonna see my friend
"I'm going to shake this thing
I'm wanna shake this pain before I retire"
And retire has always been a synonym for death.
And of course the "Buona Sera".
The Fixer
The whole song is all about how he is going to fix things. Very classic boy makes things right for girl. And the last stanzas are about staying by her side, "Find us a way to make a light" and "I'll dig your grave" - thus implying he'll be there for her when she dies.
Just Breathe
"Yes I understand that every life must end
As we sit alone, I know somday we must go"
"Stay with me
Let's just breathe"
Then there are three stanzas of essentially saying "did I ever tell you how much I love you" and it ends with
"Hold me till I die...
Meet you on the other side"
Amonst the Waves
The entire song continues this theme of "did I ever tell you how much I love you"
and then ends with "gotta say it now
Better loud
than too late"
Unthought Known
This song, from narrator to 'you' discusses the great expanse of the sky and notes
"see the path cut by the moon... for you to walk on"
and later notes "see the waves on distant shores... for you to walk on"
Both the path to heaven concept and the distant shores metaphor symbolizes heaven or an afterlife.
Speed of Sound
If this is not the song of man contemplating his own mortality while his wife sleeps beside him, I don't know what it is.
"Yesterdays, how quick they change
All lost and long gone now"
And then the refrain of battling despair and clinging to hope:
"And yet I'm still holding tight
to this dream of distant light
and that somehow I'll survive
But this night as been a long one
waiting on the sun... that just don't come"
I believe we mean 'survive' quite literally.
Force of Nature
"One man stands the edge of the ocean
a beacon on dry land
eyes upon the horizon
in the dark before the dawn"
While I can certainly see this being a literal moment as well, it is also quite metaphorical. The ocean and the horizon both being symbols of journey and death, and the solitary man facing this journey in the dark sounds a whole lot like a man who is facing death.
"All the strength you might think would disappear"
doesn't make sense in the literal sense of a man standing on a beach, but it does make sense if we are talking about a man facing his own death.
"Makes me ache... makes me shake
Is it so wrong to think that love can keep us safe?"
The End
"What were all those dreams we shared
those many years ago?
What were all those plans we made
Now left beside the road?
Behind us in the road"
"I wanted to grow old
Just want to grow old"
"Don't leave me so cold
or buried beneath the stones" .... headstones.
"Sickness in my bones .... a bit of a leap, but leukemia came to mind.
How it pains to leave you here
with the kids on your own
Just don't let me go"
--I don't think he means divorce.
"Before I disappear
whisper in my ear
give me something to echo
in my unknown future's ear"
"My dear
the end
comes near
I'm here
But not much longer"
