Yes, its beautiful. I had to check out the full band one and well....:cry::cry:
  • I have to completely disagree....

I was very disappointed when i heard the demo, it just sounded like left over ITW material to me, and nothing more...

Really diggin' the full band version!!

  • was a little dissaponited with full band version at first but it has grown on me after a few listens and fits nicely with the flow of the album..great lyrics on this song

  • Brendan Obrien did an amazing job mixing this album...however, the drums on the album version of Speed of Sound doesn't not fit the song IMO...its much too stong and garage-rocky for such a peaceful song.
  • at first i was down on the album version ...however like so many songs it has grown on me and i now prefer it to the demo
  • i like both versions actually. however, i agree that the drum tempo is *slightly* too fast for the vocals on the album version.

I'm pretty sure the tempos are identical, or are you just referring to the change in the feel between the 2 versions??

I like the demo version more individually, but I think they made the right choice for the album.

I don't think SoS sounds like anything off of ITW

  • When I first heard the recorded version (after hearing and loving the demo) my automatic reaction was 'ACK'! But after just a couple more listens... I think the version on the record is a much better 'fit'.... Backspacer has just enough 'features' that are clearly ITW influenced IMO... It makes me stand back and think about how everything in our lives branches out and effects the rest of our lives and the things/people we touch. If SOS was recorded on the album as the demo was... I think it would have a negative impact on how I feel about the album as a whole.

Speed of Sound is the unenjoyable song you have to sit through while waiting for the awesomeness of Force of Nature

i think its terrible and its possibly my least favorite PJ song. It sounds like a cheesy 80's song.

let's say the album would be near perfect if it were 33 minutes.
  • Reminds me of the first time I heard Can't Keep on Riot Act with the full band vs. Eddie's solo uke version. I wanted to puke.

But the studio version definitely fits the album better.

  • Didn't like the demo version. Was bored.

  • The demo is waayyyyyyyyyyyyyy better than that cheesy ass band version IMO....even the way Ed sings it is cheesy! he has way more emotion in the demo version...one of the worst 180's on a song EVER!! I don't know how anyone can listen to both songs side by side and not think that the demo is way better...the lyrics/song is too intimate to have that bullshit drum track...it sounds so cheap and mechanical..like they made it with a $20. pawn shop drum machine or a preset casio keyboard beat!....i'm telling you, if this album didn't already have Just Breath or The End i think they would of kept it simple like the demo....oh well....to each his own.
  • for now i like demo version better too
No matter how cold the winter ,there´s a springtime ahead...

  • I like the album version better. I liked the demo but the parts of the song didn't seem to flow very well, mainly the finger picking into the strummed parts. The added instrumentation fixed that for me.

As far as the drums, I'm sure Matt knows what the tempo of the song is and played the correct tempo. Perhaps people are just improperly using music terminology, and just don't like the drum beat he chose.

I loved the demo version. I had it on repeat on my ipod the other day. I couldn't wait to hear the album version

I dont really like the full band version. I think its the drums that hurt it.
  • I want to clarify...I don't like either version. ;)

Since they already had Just Breath and The End...I think they felt they needed to do somethng with Speed of SOund. They were right...they should have cut it out and included it on the EP later. Backspace could use another Pearl Jam song and 1 less ITW song, imo.

Great album though, love most of it.
