DELL LABTOP BATTERY AND POWER SUPPLY QUESTION

Ok I have a Dell 1501 labtop that is about 2 yrs old. I bought it brand new and it has always worked great. Well over the last 2 months I have noticed the battery life getting less and less. Recently it's been to the point where it would stay charged off the power cord for maybe 30 mins and then the red light would flash. So last nite I had it plugged in and the red light started flashing. I checked to make sure it was plugged into the outlet and into the computer. It was but still the red light was flashing. I was able to restart it and as usual it said battery low please charge. Which it has always said that and I just plug in the power supply. A message came across the screen saying you must replace battery. Well like I said I plugged the power supply into the outlet and plugged the other end into the computer. Well there is no juice left and it wont start now.

So I'm asking even if the battery is dead and not chargeable shouldn't it work off the power supply? Also there is a exposed section of the cord where you can see and touch the wires that are in the powercord. The green light on the powercord still lites up. But I was told that could be the reason why no power can reach the labtop.

Any ideas anyone?

    that laptop should turn on without the battery .. i have the same laptop .. i didn't read everything u wrote but a battery the claim is only good for about a year ..

    take the battery out hold the power button down for about 30 seconds ... clears any static that might be on the motherboard ..

    also remember that power cord is two pieces .. so one side could be bad .. do u have any warranty on that laptop ??
    i wouldn't worry about a new battery get a wall new wall plug .. there cheaper start there

    I tried using a friends Dell power cord and it still didn't start. But his cord was just a tiny different then mine, so that could have been why it didn't work too.

    So I should take the battery out and hold the power button down for 30 seconds? Should I have the power cord plugged in while I do this?

    I'm gonna head out and see if I can pick up a new power cord. Like I said on one side the wires are exposed and they look damaged.

    the holding the power button with out the power cord .. they have safety on the system's that sometimes wont let them restart .. if u were to call dell they would have u do this to trouble shoot it ... u can get them all day long on eBay ..

    make sure to get the same adapter that u had .. there are 6 cell batteries and Nine cell ..

    It was working but the red light came on again. So will try something else.

    UPDATE: I THINK ITS WORKING. :)

    first off i love your pic .. but what does the dell thing mean .. i work on computers all day .. and i would rather work on a dell then most other brands .. Mosted hated is Gateway !!

    batterys and power supplies usually come with less of a warranty than the laptop, especially if you have extended warranty.

    The battery sounds fried. Does it power on with the power plugged in and the battery out?

    also, hate to state the obvious, but have you tried another power outlet, could be that, not anything with the laptop

    The battery is indeed fried and dead. It worked yesterday a few times this new power supply cord. But not working this morning. The package came with about 10 or so different connections. I found the one that says Dell on it and have been using that one. Pisses me off this morning.

    but u might have a bad mother board ...
    u should have got a real dell replacement wall plug ..
    if that was a nine cell ..
    i have three extra plug in's ..

    Couldn't find a Dell replacement wall plug.
    I have a tech guy that I'm gonna call and see if he can figure it out whats wrong. It's weird it worked yesterday with the new plug and even last nite. Now nothing. :( :evil: :evil:

    Ok bought a replacement battery and it the computer came right on. BUT the red light to the left is still on and its solid. When I unplug the power cord the light still stays on. And when I click on the battery icon on the bottom of the screen it says 0% charged battery. I so just love these computer issues. :twisted:
