Backspacer songs up on ASCAP

The copyright info for the Backspacer tunes is now up on ASCAP. No b-sides so far, which hints that maybe we won't see any released for a little while? But for those interested, you can see who's responsible for each song.

    The thing I don't get is don't the other musicians write the parts of the song they're playing? I can't imagine Vedder telling Cameron "play boom, bah, boom boom, bah" or something. I understand the writers make more money from the song's royalties, etc... but I don't understand how when it's recorded with the full band that they don't all share credit in writing their parts for it.

    songwriting credits typically go to whomever came up with the core structure of the songs..so chord progression and melody for the most part. but if jeff writes a bass line and they write the song around that then he'd get song writing credit.

    They do. Matt mainly wrote "The Fixer" and Mike and Stone helped finish it. Thus, all 3 have credit. Matt also wrote "Johnny Guitar" with help from Stone. Another example would be "Save You" or "Hail Hail" which has parts written by more than one member. Chances are that if one person is credited with the music, that they wrote the whole thing themselves. Arranging the songs/coming up with drum and bass parts is not really part of the songwriting process.

    I play drums, and coming up with parts to fit can be challenging, and I'd consider it part of the writing process... especially the really cool stuff Cameron comes up with. But it sounds like if the song is already arranged from start to finish with the drummer or whomever just playing along with whatever, then maybe that makes the difference.

    Coming up with drum/bass parts is part of the arranging process, which usually comes after the song is fully written. If everyone involved with arranging a song got writing credit...there would be a lot of pissed of songwriters! ;)

    Most bands make up for the disparity in songwriting credits by splitting the publisher's portion of the royalties evenly. Some bands show the entire band as songwriters so that there is no bad blood, which often occurs of a few guys are making much more then others in the band.

    I believe thats the case with U2, all their songs are credited to all 4 members, whereas im pretty sure just Bono and Edge write most of their songs.

    I never understood with Pearl Jam why on Vs they give songwriting credit to all 5 members on every song, when we know thats not the case (pretty sure ed wrote rvm by himself), and yet on all their other albums they give credit to whoever wrote the song, not all the members. ANy ideas?

    Could be that the actual songwriters spoke-up, and wanted whats coming to them. At that point, the non-songwriters would have already made a fortune on the first 2 records, so perhaps they were satisfied.
