NO CODE~Jack Irons Drums (some of the best)

I have posted this before and I still believe that some of the best drumming is on the No Code session with Jack Irons..listen to the drums on the following songs:

In My Tree ..some of the best sounding drums at the end of this song
who you are ..all the different beats and changes
Habit & Hail Hail ..very strong drumming

don't get me wrong..I'm not saying he was the Best drummer..just very good sounding drums on this and Yield for that fact....

I've seen some of the posts beating on Matt (no pun intended)..which I think he is a better drummer with effects and his song writing capibilities..plus Jack didn't want to tour....

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/No_Code (interesting read and all the turmoil in the band during No Code)..jeff was pissed..although he gets his share of songs in...

When I first heard No Code, I was not happy at the huge change in direction.

No Code has definitely grown on me. Jack has what I call a "bohemian" style of playing, which live was a bit sloppy, but it was very unique and helped the band grow in a new direction.

No Code would be nowhere near the same album without him. I can't wait for the re-release of this album. I'm hoping it will be less muddy and thick in sound, and hopefully make all the instruments more prominent.

I think you mean Riot Act.

I don't get the hate for No Code, almost every song is pretty excellent.

Great songs - it's just a complete 180 degree turn from their first 3 albums.

  • Definitely some awesome drums on this album, but I never fell in love with Jack's drumming live. I didn't think he could hang on some of the heavier songs in the early pj catalog. That being said his studio work is on a couple of my favorite albums and he is a very influential part of the music on those albums. I also think he is a key to Pearl Jam's long term success.

Wow, Im surprised to hear anyone knock Jack's live drumming. I mean, a bunch of shows from early 95, which included a frequent rotation of harder songs (go, animal, blood)...those shows are great and Jack sounds awesome....IMHO
I hold the pain, release me!

I hate hearing Matt play Jack's songs. In My Tree has never been the same.

Riot Act > No Code :)

There are some very good songs on No Code and some I don't like. And some songs that are great live but deosn't do it for me on the album.

Nothing but love for Jack's drumming and drum sounds. I realise it's a matter of personal taste but to my hears he was the best drummer for the band at a time when the band was most interesting live and in the studio.

Speaking of his drum sounds, take a listen to Mirrorball and Merkinball, particularly the sound of the drums on the studio version of Long Road. That sound is just the greatest, IMHO.

  • I think No Code is a great (really really great) album.. i mean: sometimes, hail hail, who you are (although putting that song on the RVM is too much), in my tree (genious, mostly jack iron's work), off he goes, smile, present tense and around the bend.. all incredible songs! And jack irons have a big part on that, great drummer!

Yield is where jack shows all of his talent.. take a better listen on low light for example, i don't think matt would play that song with such intensity...

I have many PJ songs near the top of the stack. In my Tree is at the top of the stack. I like it better than any other PJ song, and each play is like the first time. The song is orgasmic. Any other rhythm section than what was there on No Code wouldn't have been the same. Magic happened that day. None of the post-Jack live versions ever sounded right. This is one of those PJ songs that sounds so much better in the studio than live. My only complaint is that In my Tree was mixed pretty low. I hope an anniversary re-release of No Code will fix that. Who you are is also a masterpiece and credit for that song's ambience goes again to the rhythm section, especially Jack.
Up here so high I start to shake, Up here so high the sky I scrape, I've no fear but for falling down, So look out below I am falling now, Falling down,...not staying down, Could’ve held me up, rather tear me down, Drown in the river

    I am saying that.
    He was.
(though I can never forgive him for "Whale Song")

Matt has none of the finesse or subtlety that Jack had. Matt can be great, but he only has one setting - hard as fuck. Jack had such sweet, polyrhythmic nuances made No Code in particular such a joy to listen to. I'm thrilled that they brought back "In My Tree" & "Who You Are", but Matt just doesn't have what it takes to do them justice.
