I atteneded my second Pearl Jam concert. June 24, 2003, Germain Amphitheater, Columbus, Ohio. A beautifully hot summer evening. They played Daughter second, which was shocking, and a good indication of what was in store for us, as though they had played 55 or so shows to that point in the year, we still got two tour debuts in Evacuation and Red Mosquito. We also got one of only five performances of Footsteps that tour, and one of only four performances of In Hiding. They also left the stage after Fuckin' Up but returned for a third encore as the crowd wouldn't shut up and played Ledbetter, which Ed said was courtesy of Mr. Stone Gossard, as playing it meant they were going past curfew and would face a fine. Anyways, a great all around show, I got to see lots of songs I didn't see the first time I saw them, and quite a few songs I thought would take me a long time to see, such as Footsteps. Anyways, just reliving a great show, maybe I will revisit it here in a little bit.

06/24/03 - Germain Amphitheater: Columbus, OH

support act: Buzzcocks

set: Can’t Keep, Daughter, 1/2 Full, Go, Save You, Ghost, Better Man, Grievance, Evacuation, Even Flow, In Hiding, Cropduster, Corduroy, Elderly Woman, Red Mosquito, improv, Rearviewmirror
enc 1: Given To Fly, Wishlist, Not For You/(Start Me Up), Footsteps, Do The Evolution, Jeremy
enc 2: Fuckin’ Up
enc 3: Yellow Ledbetter

notes: Ed thanks the people in the back after ‘Elderly Woman’ and makes a quip about the 17-year locusts. He mentions a request for Mike, leading to a bit bit of Zep riffing (’Nobody’s Fault But Mine’) between Matt and Mike before ‘Red Mosquito.’ Ed talks about being ready to do the song if he “… can just shift himself” (Robert Plant reference). The improv is about Ohio and “Me oh my oh, lost in Ohio … I’m in Ohio high oh … just making my way through Ohio where the sky is and the roads are long … went back to Ohio and my city was gone” (nod to Pretenders). At the start of the encore, Ed thanks the Buzzcocks and talks about watching a video where a band was pretending to be a punk band and he thanks the “real thing,” the Buzzcocks. “Buzzcocks were opening for the Sex Pistols before I was fondling my first erection,” and he talks of how he met them a long time ago when he was a crew guy carrying their gear. “You never know how things will turn out.” ‘Wishlist’ has an extended instrumental ending with additional lyrics:”I wish I was this, I wish I was that; I wish I could do this, I wish I could do that … they don’t care about you, they don’t care about me; they just care about money money money money money … there ain’t no love in Washington DC anymore, but there’s love here, in your houses and your homes … when you’re singing alone … use it like a weapon, a weapon of mass construction.” This leads to a ‘Not For You’ intro: “… so it’s not for you, its for them.” Ed tags a little of “Start Me Up” in the middle, asking for a little background (”if you start me up, I’ll never stop … you make a dead man cum”). Ed says, “Threw in a a song by the Folksmen, there …” (joking about the Spinal Tap spin off band known for performing a sanitized, folk version of the Rolling Stones’ ‘Start Me Up’). “Don’t know if you recognized it. Don’t know if you’ll understand this next one, too. It goes early early early as we go … certainly not one raped on the radio or anything,” leading to Footsteps. During ‘DTE,’ “I am the first man to act like Elvis” as he is wearing the crazy Elvis sunglasses. Ed introduces the band and says they will be doing a song written by Mr. Neil Young, adding “This is George W’s favorite song, leading to ‘Fuckin’ Up.’ They return for a surprising third encore with Ed noting, “You can thank Mr. Stone Gossard for this one,” and they close with ‘YL.’
words seem so out of place.

Descent setlist... Some nice semi-rare songs here - In Hiding, Red Mosquito, Footsteps... It's interesting how stuff like this works out... Looking at your setlist vs. all of mine I'd say you're lucky because it took me 6 shows to see Jeremy & 22 shows to see Fuckin' Up.

I remember this show, I was there, I got my 10C tickets, it was awesome. On the 03 tour, I went to 8 different shows, this one ranked right up within the top 5 of the tour.

Yeah, Jeremy surprised me, and in fact, before the show I told the kid I went with, that they probably wouldn't play it because they had played it the show before this one, and they don't play it very often anymore. I also was telling him how when they play Daughter they usually tag some other song(s) on to the end, and then since they played it second, they didn't do a tag. All of the advice, or inside-knowledge I was giving him on a Pearl Jam show was turning out to be false. That was part of what made it so special I guess, even I, who felt like I couldn't be surprised, kept getting surprised. And yeah, In Hiding, Red Mosquito and especially Footsteps were all awesome to see, and you are right, it is cool I got to see them at my second show, and someone else mentioned it was their first. I guess that is just luck of the draw. I have been to seven shows, but there are still plenty of songs I would love to see that I have not gotten the chance to see yet.

Ahhhh, so it has been six years since I nearly passed out from heat exhaustion in Columbus. It was an extremely warm day and I made the mistake of wearing a black shirt while I stood in the 10C line for hours without water. I actually never went to my third row seat for this show because I spent a good amount of the night in the first aid station. At least it was close to the stage. hahahaha

Which means it is almost the sixth year anniversary of the Detroit shows. I got to the hotel turned on the TV and heard a line I will never forget on a newscast, "And there was crack cocaine found beneath the mattress. I'm Al Allen, back to you." I still laugh at that one all of these years later.

Time for even more stories in Chicago!

It will take me a lifetime to see 6 shows, and an eternity to see 22.
