I tried to get a quote for some term life insurance. The dry operator ask several questions and then she came to the one about where I work. I don't work I said, I volunteer.
She ask my income and I told her I was on disability. She ask what for? I confessed Bi-Polar disorder.
She said, well we should just stop here, because they don't cover mental illness. I ask, isn't this discrimination? She said she thought so, but there was nothing she could do about it.
I have a child. I need life insurance. I don't know what to do and I'm so mad I want to write the President. Do you know how many Americans have Bi-Polar disorder, about 2.5 million people.
I'm angry as hell and don't know what to do. I'm a human just like everyone else.

That sucks. Do you have to go through that company? There might be some companies that do cover it0

 this is my thought.
tho i will say, more than likely, due to your illness.....even if you can get it, the cost may well be prohibitvely expensive. obviously, insurance companies are profitable b/c they know the #s, and it's all a gamble....that $$$ in from premiums will always exceed $$$ out for payouts of policies. that's the simple math of it, and therefore, the greater your risk factors for actually being a liability, the greater your cost. i DO wish you luck and hope you find a company who can work with you...sorry i don't have any answers for you. however, there are a lot of great, caring and smart people on this board....a few who work in the medical industry, a few others in insurance...so hopefully someone can truly offer you some assistance. good luck. Stay with me... Stay with me...
 Let's just breathe...
I am myself like you somehow0

I started thinking about something...risk...whether or not you are going to die and they are going to have to pay.
If they want only healthy people, there is still risk, you hear of athletes and healthy people dropping dead everyday from unexpected cancer or other physical ailments. We are all gonna die, but when?
My point is aren't people with a chemical imbalance actually a better risk because their "disease" is in the brain? My emotions and thoughts can't kill me. No one dies from Bi-Polar disorder unless they kill themselves which isn't covered anywhere anyhow.
There is a terrible stigma attached to mental illness and it covers such a wide range of disorders. Some are severe, some are managed by meds. I'm sure I will eventually find insurance, let's hope I can afford it. My son certainly deserves it. To think, how much more I had in my 20's and 30's than I do in my 40's. Aren't these the years we are suppose to be settled? Oh well, I'm off topic....
I wonder why Pearl Jam hasn't done anything to help break the stigma of mental illness? They help so many people/groups, I guess you can't get them all.0

            This is an interesting issue....
I am a mental health worker but the issues of trying to get life insurance have never came up in my work so I am sorry but I do not have any suggestions from experience
however one suggestion might be to have someone get a policy for you (ie a parent or sibling) not sure if it will make a difference but worth looking into if they could get a policy on you.
otherwise there are associations and foundations that you could contact that might make a suggestion, I will try to think of some but off the top of my head I am not sure**CUBS GO ALL THE WAY IN......never **0
