Grand Rapids epic show. Townsend and Ramones' birthdays celebrated in style.
Things were different then, all is different now.

Wasnt there but I remember all the hype that surrounded the show. Especially with what went down with the Ten Club tickets that night. I have the DVD of this show. It definitely was a great show. Some say they fed off the energy of having new and different faces in the front that night.

Being that I grew up a half-hour from Grand Rapids, I'm a little pissed that I didn't go home and visit the family for this show. It was a great show.

i've been to a bunch of shows, and this is easily near the top. i especially loved my 7th row seats and ed's proclamation of "i think we might be fuckin' with you again!" as they launched into Satan's Bed.

This was the last PJ show I was at...oh so long ago. But such an amazing DAY....still lives with me. I'll never forget it.

Thank you PJ, Van Andel, and GR, my birthplace :)

I'll go a bit more in depth meme, and share my memories of that day...

I remember being so excited about it, counting down the days for almost a month. That week I was so hyper a kid I sat next to in class told me i should try taking something for it, haha.

Finally on the 19th, I headed to school for my first class that I couldn't miss, then skipped the rest of my day to hang out in the city with 4 of my best friends. We walked around, ate, picked up our tickets [which I kept in my pocket, along with my hand the entire day for fear of losing them], bought The Who By Numbers from Dodds Records, and "Flowed." "Flow"-ing was something me and my friends would do occasionally, blare a loud PJ song from the car radio and play our air instruments and jump around like early era Pearl Jam. Yeah, we probably looked like idiots but it was so much fun. :)

After that we set up at McFaddens, my friends band was playing there. We just sat and chatted, and lots of inside jokes came from our time sitting there.

After a while, I remember going into a trance like state, and the next few hours I sat and don't remember talking or hearing anything, haha.

Outside the Van Andel I stood by some people who were making a 'Veterans for Ed' flag. [the same one that Ed got on stage before playing Army Reserve] I remember the girl [who posts fairly often on this forum, although I forget her name. jessicaw?] broke her heal and was upset by that, haha. I also remember being pissed that a radio station that I despise was standing outside the Van Andel holding their signs up like they were promoting the concert or something. yeah, fuck them.

I remember sitting through MMJ's set, loving the drummer but not really making a decision on the band as a whole. [They have since become one of my absolute favorite bands of all time] I remember when Small Town opened the crowd was singing so loud I could hardly hear Eddie and was amazed.

Oh yeah, the ticket thing was pretty sweet too  we had front row wing seats, which for me and my friend was amazing.

I'll try to condense this a bit and wrap it up, but I recall hearing Matt start the intro to Satan's Bed, and after about two hits I knew what song it was......and was psyched as hell. I remember Mike running around like a madman....especially during Crazy Mary where he and Ed were trying to juke each other out, haha.

So, see you all in Chicago...it's been a long drought for the full band for me, and I'm ready for that to end.

Great, great show. I went to the 2 Chicago shows that week as well and after the 2nd night of Chicago (which was a damn good show) thinking that Grand Rapids will be just an average show. Boy was I wrong. First off we got a pre-set. Right before the 2nd song of the pre-set, someone yelled "happy birthday Pete" and Ed said fuck it, and went into "Can't Explain", AWESOME. Tons of energy from the fans, and the 10 club mix up probably helped, just my opinion. Loved my 10th row seats. Highlights were Hard to Imagine, Red Mosquito, Satan's Bed, and Parting Ways. Have the DVD as well. Just a great show, but you really had to be there. Also remember twoards the end Ed saying something along the lines of Grand Rapids, who'd have known. Can't wait for Toronto and Chicago.

Something was in the air that night. I felt a connection with the band and the crowd that can not be explained. I think that I left my body that night and felt the music. One of the best nights of my life. I am so honored to have been a part of it.

If I knew where it was I would take you there. There's much more than this

    Thanks for sharing :)

Oddly perhaps, the highlight for me was Baba, my first. I knew it would happen when Ed mentioned Pete's birthday :)

Drove in from Chicago just to see them in my home town. Amazing. Also, how does one have a DVD of the show? Is it good quality? How would I get my hands on that? PM me if needed.

Yea, isn't weird how, for some reason that is not tangible, certain shows just have a different vibe despite the set list. I've been to some PJ shows that one would say didn't have the greatest setlist, but the vibe was tremendous. Thus making it a great show. And I've been to some PJ shows that, on paper, you would think kicked ass but the vibe just wasn't there. So I left not really feeling it. From what I heard, Grand Rapids had it all. Great setlist and tremendous vibe.

My first PJ show across the border and what a show  Thanks again for the ticket "screw-up" :o as we were on the wings Mike side. We couldn't believe it when we checked out where our seats were...from that moment on we were walking above the ground. It was an amazing night....meeting the Chi-Town people and hanging out afterwards at the hotel we didn't want the night to end. Great memories thanks GR.
    Peace,

  • still coming down from that show--
The world is like a ride in an amusement park, and when you choose to go on it you think it's real because that's how powerful our minds are. The ride goes up and down, around and around, it has thrills and chills, and it's very brightly colored, and it's very loud, and it's fun for a while. Many people have been on the ride a long time, and they begin to wonder, "Hey, is this real, or is this just a ride?" And other people have remembered, and they come back to us and say, "Hey, don't worry; don't be afraid, ever. Because this is just a ride." And we...kill those people. "Shut him up! I've got a lot invested in this ride, shut him up! Look at my furrows of worry, look at my big bank account, and my family. This has to be real." It's just a ride. But we always kill the good guys who try and tell us that, you ever notice that? And let the demons run amok? But it doesn't matter, because it's just a ride. And we can change it any time we want. It's only a choice. No effort, no work, no job, no savings of money. Just a simple choice, right now, between fear and love. The eyes of fear want you to put bigger locks on your doors, buy guns, close yourself off. The eyes of love instead see all of us as one. Here's what we can do to change the world, right now, to a better ride. Take all that money we spend on weapons and defenses each year and instead spend it feeding and clothing and educating the poor of the world, which it would pay for many times over, not one human being excluded, and we could explore space, together, both inner and outer, forever, in peace.

I went with 4 other casual PJ fans, and they all were blown away by the end. Ed's joint effort with MMJ on the Bands "It Makes no Difference" was my highlight, it just felt so chill and cool. And I think my light buzz was setting in.

Anyways, I was worried if my friends were enjoying the show after the near 45 minute rarity jaunt in the first encore (my only minor complaint of the night as it did lag on a bit) but after the show all they were talking about was the the fact that the 2nd encore melted their faces. Baba seemed extremely intense that night, the crowd totally drowned out the band. Comatose became my favorite song and Blood seemed to be really loud and rockin'. Loved it. (C-mon beat Chicago! right before ed's "paint ed big" line in Blood..ooow!)

was fortunate enough to be sitting front row (4 seats off center, between Ed and Stone) at the '06 Grand Rapids show, and both the band's and the crowd's energy that night was absolutely palpable,...

I too was at this show. Got some pretty awful 10 club seats, which sucked. I live here and they were the worst seats I have seen the band in. But it was and is a memorable concert.
