Garden mean? Discuss.
In my lifetime, I have conquered the Multiverse by force of trUth.

    I'll give this one a go then.

    I think "Garden of stone" refers to a cemetery and the song is about being "taken" by death but not wanting to go. "The direction of the eye, so misleading" is about how we all want things that are visually appealing (ie. superficial appearance) and that we think will fulfill our "modern needs". "The defection of the soul, nauseously quick" is about how we easily succumb to the vices, we lose our souls to the trivial things in life that will never satisfy our deepest needs (love, true happiness). A sell your soul to the Devil kinda thing.

    Something along those lines. A hauntingly beautiful song which never ceases to send chills down my spine.

    I think it refers to any city. "Garden of stone" As we "evolve" in any society , we're in reality moving farther and farther away from what's truely important in life and as human beings. In the song , he's going
    but reluctantly. Not a whole lot you can do , but do the best you can

    I agree. It can be about any big city. Garden of stones- city with buildings.
    But it can be about people. Society.

    "The defection of the soul, nauseously quick" - about "modern needs" - it is about how qiuck people forget what is really important: their dreams, feelings, other people. They just slide everyday in many small things they have to do but which don't have any bigger meaning.

    Into your garden, garden of stone..." - now we can see the man, who will go inside this cold place trying to be himself and trying to show his nature - so different than others. Maybe even he wants to change the rest?
    But in these words I can see this man can not win - even he shows his wounds - I guess all these people can't see him, though they look at him. But they don't care.
    But this man won't stop...

    (BTW. The best song on Ten IMO)

    As not much of a computer-girl, I never entered this community thing. And as English is not my native language (I'm from The Netherlands), I suffer trying to explain things.
    Great topic, good to see the views other people have on the PJ songs.

    Ed made reference at a show once that the song was about a military cemetery. I believe "I don't question, our existence, I just question, our modern needs" is about Ed loving our country but wondering why we need to go to "war" to secure fossil fuels for our future.

    Maybe it's just where I was at in my life when I first really listened to the song - sadly enough, that was just a few months ago - I related it to my life in general. I see it as going through our day-to-day life, and the struggles we face. The things we see (the direction of the eye) aren't always what we think (so misleading), but once we get it in our head that it is that way, it is very difficult to change (the defection of the soul, nauseously quick). I think I bring a lot of pain on my self with what I want (modern needs). The chorus to me says that I will walk into life, taking whatever is given to me, because I don't have a choice. What I do have a choice in is how I react to what life gives me (I won't be taken but I'll go). Life can be so unyielding (garden of stone). I think that each person is alone in the decisions they make, regardless of the input they receive from others (when all is said and done, and we're still alone). At the end of the day, we are the ones who must make peace with the decisions we have made (I won't share, I won't show, I don't need...what you have to give).

    As I said, that's just my interpretation from where I was when I first listened to it.

    All that being said, it is probably my favorite PJ song, and the one I always put on when I am contemplating something. I think I am going to get Chiqui's visual rendition of the song tattoo'd on my ribcage.
