I know we had a lengthy thread about this movie on the old board, I've been itching to watch it again.

Excellent film. Great music. Emotional ending.

I stumbled across this website a few years ago that has great information about the movie.

I'm not quite sure which interpretation I subscribe to.

That had to be really hard to pull off. It was on a Sunday morning...is that correct?

I think it was a weekday... hmm... I forget actually. Sunday would make the most sense. I remember seeing someone I grew up with wearing a tie and jacket walking the sidewalk and looked like he was on his way to work, so that's what makes me think it was a work day.

We had to arrive at 3am... at the scientology "church" nearby, and the job was to keep all people off the sidewalks. Wasn't a problem for me since I was used to corralling people, but they had SO many assistants there that did nothing to stop people from walking in the shot. Most of their people were useless, letting people thru the barricade at the ends of the blocks... plus the million doors to businesses and residences in that area that people walked out of. There was one guy who got thru the barricade on my block and he was heading towards me, and I wanted to keep him from entering Times Square, so I run over to him, and say "stop" and try to get him into a doorway, or against a wall, but he didn't speak english... he kept trying to pass me. Maybe he thought I was trying to mug him. ...anyway, they needed to hire some security people, not assistants who don't know crowd control.

The shot obviously worked. Anyone who may have been caught in the camera was digitally erased. :) I need to watch the movie one day...

Having not watch the original, I'm wondering what separates it from Crowe's version?

I've read that people watching from buildings are visible, but I've never seen anyone.

it'sa been a while since i've seen either.....and i saw vanilla sky first, but i think sky does veer a wee bit from the original? i don't recall right now.....but overall, i think simply, the acting. and it was written/directed by a spaniard originally, so perhaps his own vision, and in that language, somehow made it superior. however, as such a fan of vanilla sky, you really owe it to yourself to see the original. i can't recall the spanish title, but it translates into 'open your eyes.'

I caught the final scene on "You Tube" some time ago and, while out of context, it didn't do much for me. To be fair, I should start from the beginning.

    yes you should.
altho who knows, given your love for vanilla sky for so long w/o seeing the original, you may just have your heart set on that version and dislike the original. and not saying it's the case with you, but oddly enough i know many people who simply do not enjoy foreign-language films, find it too distracting or whatever, thus why the popularilty of remaking foreign language flicks for english-speakers. me, i enjoy many foreign films, in whatever native tongue...a good flick is a good flick! sometimes, i find i actually enjoy them more than the remakes simply b/c the dialogue sounds so good in another language.

the departed was a remake? i did not know. LOVED that movie.....i'll have to check out the original!
i guess i shouldn't be so surprised, sooooooooooo many movies are remade - whether from one language to another, os simply an old film made new. overall, i DO believe that most of the time, the originals are better.....but not always. i can't think of specific examples, but there are times i prefer an 'update'......may not really be 'better'...i just may like/identify with it more. however, overall.....you bet....originals usually are superior.

    *back to vanilla sky*
    :D

    and yes...there it is!

Is there the same relationship between the dialog on screen and the music?

The story is great and I love dissecting it, but the song selection in Crowe's version is outstanding. Is this true of the original?

as i don't speak spanish, how would i know? :?
    hahaha. seriously...i have no idea.

have you looked into any of his other works?
Alejandro Amenábar has a very interesting filmography. i'd be curious to see if you like the original at all, b/c you most definitely seem enamored with crowe's film. i wonder how much that may affect your 'objective' viewing of the original. hmmmm...just reading up on him a bit, perhaps there IS the music connection in both, b/c he IS a composer as well as a writer/director...and he wrote/directed and composed the score for the original, so perhaps that connection exists...but as i said, as someone who doesn't speak spanish, no idea. quite honestly it's so long since i've seen either flick, i really can't recall the music from either. you most definitely have a far greater love of vanilla sky than i do. as much as i enjoyed both films, the are not films i watch over and over.

man, he wrote the score for the sea inside, i did not know that...another excellent flick!

Wouldn't say I hated it but I really couldn't get into it.

For the people who were wondering earlier, a friend of mine who's seen it and the Spanish original and liked both says he really thinks the original is superior. But I barely made it through Vanilla Sky staying awake so I don't plan to see the one in Spanish. ;)

Just found the original on Hulu. We're slow today, so I'm going to give this thing a whirl.

Infernal affairs is WAY better then the departed. Just about everything from Hollywood these days is a remake or a comic book

I read not long ago that Sideways is being remade in Japan. I was not aware that there is a wine country in Japan. :? ;)
