Comment on Jackie Robinson Day in Baseball...

Now I'm sure this is going to come out wrong but does anyone think this Jackie Robinson Day in Baseball is a bit ridiculous and over-the-top? I mean why do we need every player in the league wearing number 42 that day? What is the point of that? I understand the significance of him being the 1st black player but should we do the same for the first Dominican player or the first Japanese player? Everyone wearing 42 is just plain dumb to me. It looks so stupid on tv and just seems over-the-top. Does anyone agree with me?

You're right.
It came out wrong.
I don't think anyone that didn't live through that time in the United States will ever understand the impact (I know I never will). This country was segregated and mostly racist and what he did represents things I can't relate to. Other ethnicities that have become a large part of baseball never faced what Jackie Robinson did as an African-American at that time in our history.0 -
Oh and I think everyone wearing the same number is great. It helps remind everyone that it's a team game and that it's only the name on the front that matters.0

His #42 is hanging in my dad's bar at my parent's house. As is Ted William's #9. And we're Yankee fans.I love to turn you on0

Straight up I don't agree, I pondered the same question yesterday and today. Here's a reason for the wearing of the number for ALL MLB players some of them DON'T know who Jackie Robinson was and what he went through. It's simply a reminder for them as to where baseball has come from and where it needs to progress into the future.
As to other ethnicity's they wouldn't be here without what JR did and went through with complete.......
g under p....Grace Under Pressure. He could have fired back to the many racist remarks but he didn't and that is one of many attributes he represented in his time that should be honored today.
So that's one reason why we have a day of honor by ALL MLB teams the one and only Jackie Robinson.

It took me 2 hours to figure that out yesterday. I wasn't paying attention but I felt like every batter was number 42. Around the 7th inning I was like "wait a minute, so is the pitcher! What the hell?" Then I got it. Hehe.
I think the thing is that without Jackie Robinson, you may not have Dominican or Japanese players. It's kind of a symbol of old barriers falling and bringing baseball into a new era. I'm ok with it.0 -

look I don't deny the impact of what Jackie Robinson did or went through I am just questionning the length we are going through to celebrate it. Isn't retiring the number 42 for every team enough? To me every player wearing 42 in one game is dumb and looks ridiculous. How much is too much? I would think having one player per year per team wear 42 would be a greater celebration than one game every player on every team wearing it. Just my opinion though and it has nothing to do with race.0

I don't pay much attention to baseball, but in other sports, hockey for example, on certain anniversary or celebratory type nights an entire team will often wear a players' number and name on their jersey in place of their own. I think it is classy and respectful.0 -

I thought it was a little odd having everyone wear his jersey, but I don't have a problem with it. The thing I worry about is how they keep expanding it each year. I think it was 2 years ago one player from each team wore his jersey and then last year individual players could ask the league to wear his jersey. Now everyone wore his jersey. I'm just worried they might over market a tribute if that's possible.- Busted down the pretext

By my rudimentary math, there are 2430 games played in a season. They do this for one day of games... 15 games or so. That's less than 1% of the games. How much is too much? I think the better question is how little is too insignificant to make a big deal about it?0 -

By June I'm sure the OP will have forgotten about this or maybe he has no idea how bad things were back then for a player of color to enter the league. The forgotten one Larry Doby first player in the AL, second to enter MLB second to manage behind Frank Robinson doesn't ANY respect however he faced the same or WORSE abuse than JR.
So why not do this for JR for a day were you that inconvienced by the games yesterday OP?

Usually we agree on most things GP, and on this one I'm with you 100%....btw what is it about washed up Sox pitchers trying to throw No-no's against the A's in April? Is this going to become a biannual event?g under p wrote:soulsinging wrote:pjhawks wrote:look I don't deny the impact of what Jackie Robinson did or went through I am just questionning the length we are going through to celebrate it.
