The band of the moment that comes to mind, would be Fleet Foxes. And going back Crosby Stills and Nash.

Who are some bands current or from the past, whose music focused on harmonies and harmony?

You would never know it from their cd's but i saw Ryan Adams and the Cardinals twice last month and both times they were employing some kick ass vocal harmonies in a lot of their songs. Particularly Cold Roses.

    It sounded specatacular.

Otherwise the main two that come to mind for me have been mentioned Fleet Foxes & The Shins.

Ryan Adams & The Cardinals do a spectacular job of using vocal harmonies..

Pinback is the proper answer here
“I know this song so well, I can smoke a cigarette, have a drink, brush my teeth, take a shit, and mow the lawn while singing it. But I'll only be doing a couple of those things during this version.”

Queen is unquestionably the best when it comes to vocal harmonies.

I prefer the newer Chili Peppers stuff to the older stuff. They sound much more classic now, imo.

Beach Boys set the benchmark, and pretty high, I'll add.

    The Beatles.......................

I really like what System of a Down did with vocal harmonies. 2 voices so different yet they blended so well, imo. Not a fan of them trying to "mainstream" their sound, but what they did with the singing really kept them in my rotation, for awhile at least.

I just thought of a few more.

My Morning Jacket (Can't believe I forgot that one)
    Alice In Chains (excellent harmonization)
The Doobie Brothers :? cheesy, but they did use them...

I second The Shins. That's exactly what drew me to them.
It makes much more sense to live in the present tense.
  • Some of the most interesting harmonies of the Beach Boys' music (think "Good Vibrations") were just Brian Wilson re-recorded.

    My nerd job is done.

I agree. People hate on Anthony's voice, but he's had the same voice since day one. The newer albums with layered with John's vocal's sound much much better IMO.

Flea pulls his weight, as well, imo.

John can be a little hit and miss live with his backup vocals, but I think it kinda blends with the music pretty well, almost b/c of it.

I'm not just talkin about what Froosh does with vox either. The way he layers the guitars is pretty cool as well. I would love to see them have Omar, from TMV, join them on tour. ESPECIALLY IN MICHIGAN has got some amazing criscrossing harmonic guitar parts.
