Covers open me up to a whole different type of music. For example, I would never have heard Victoria Williams' Crazy Mary if it hadn't been for PJ's version.

I was listening to Stranglehold by Ted Nugent this morning and was imagining if PJ covered this, it would be great. Mike would absolutely fucking OWN the solo. Jeff would make the bass thump and Ed's singing would be great as it always is. Classic song that is timeless IMO.

That is my favorite U2 song

If I knew where it was I would take you there. There's much more than this

Cortez or Down by the River - really liked Ed's work on Under Pressure at the Lynch show. Although without Ben to hit the falsetto notes, may be a problem for PJ to pull

I'm hoping for one cover per show maximum; they have 8 (possibly 9) albums of their own material.

Everytime I hear a cover in concert I think of what original song could I have heard instead.

Love the username. We have a sailor babo at the house.

Put me down for someone who loves covers. I think they are fillers on albums, but live it can bring you together, especially when they are out of left field. Lets you know what the artists are listening to.

Don't Be Shy was a great one on the 2000 tour, as was Timeless Melody. I'd like to see these two get dusted off.

New ones? As much as I love Neil, no more Neil. Here's a few I could hear PJ covering.

Don't Drag Me Down - Social Distortion (Let Mike pick a cover!)
Let there be Rock - Drive-By Truckers
    Mountainside - Flaming Lips
    Dignity - Bob Dylan
    Declare Independence - Bjork
"You're no help," he told the lime. This was unfair. It was only a lime; there was nothing special about it at all. It was doing the best it could.

I think squeezing in a part of a song into a jam is cool, but IMO PJ plays far too many covers during a show.

they already play way more original songs than most bands.

That's true, because they play longer than most bands.

But if you go see U2 or Springsteen you might hear one cover, while sometimes there are three, four or five in a Pearl Jam show.

Yeah, but U2 plays pretty much the same set every night and Bruce plays his best songs. If PJ dropped those covers, they'd end up playing shit like Get Right. The covers usually come in the encore, when they're looking for huge anthemic tunes to close the show. They haven't written many of those since Yield. I'd rather hear Baba O'Riley than Save You.

I have good stats on covers though. I was calling for Fortunate Son right before the 03 tour when they played it regular, and after that I was asking for The Seeker, which got played in Boston in 04 when I saw them.

I'd love to hear the Seeker again. Otherwise, I'd be all over hearing the band do 'Do You Feel Like We Do.' Get Mike on the talkbox, let them jam it out and tear shit up. It'd be sweet. I'd also love to hear them cover Led Zep... I don't think they've ever done it. Maybe 'Hey Hey What Can I Do' or 'Communication Breakdown.' I'd also love to hear them do 'Red Hill Town' by U2. Or 'Idiot Wind' by Dylan.

ooooooh.... the Faces, Stay With Me. That'd kick ass!

angie, gimme shelter or sway by the stones. i remember a mike interview where he said sway was his favorite stones song and he would love to play it live.

btw, i know mike always plays an angie riff here and there, and the song list at the home page says they played both angie and gimme shelter twice each, but c'mon! that's just not enough :D

Yea, even if they only do a riff or Vedder sings a couple lyrics in daughter tag, they count it as being played live.

Even the Stones still do covers during their shows. The broad range of bands Pearl Jam covers is one of the best things about them. I always look forward to hearing a few each show, no more, no less. I was at the Pittsburgh show a few years back when the played "Waiting on the Friend" for the first time, and that really was a highlight of that show.
They covered that song because the last time they had played Pittsburgh it was with the Stones. And it's not the only time PJ has picked a cover song based on their location -- Memphis/Elvis, Vegas/Elvis, Atlantic City/Bruce, Lubbock TX/Buddy Holly, Detroit/the MC5, KISS/NYC. It's like they're customizing the show with covers. Anyway, there's so many I'd like to hear this tour, it would be great to hear one new each show.
I think I read Jeff Ament say one time he'd like to cover AC/DC's "If you want blood...." And I'd like to hear that. Maybe KISS' "Black Diamond."
How about Bad Radio's "Believe you me." Does that count as a cover?
The Beatles' "I am the Walrus." How about reviving "I got you" by Split Enz?
On the flipside, I'm probably alone on this one, but I wouldn't mind temporarily retiring "RITFW".

This may not be liked.........I know nutmeg will hate this....but I'd love to hear Pearl Jam cover an Oasis song. It'd be fitting in Manchester. Somethin like Hello that would suit Eddie's vocals. I expect to get flamed alive for this.....no pun intended
