Surfer Rosa and Dolittle are the places to start for sure.{if (work != 0) {
work = work + 1;
sleep = sleep - work * 10;}
else if (work >= 0) {
reality.equals(false);
work = work +1;
}system("pause");
return 0;}0 -

Tell that to my friend who overplayed it during our senior year in high school. :x
Granted it may be an awesome song...I just can't listen to it anymore.7/2/06 - Denver, CO

wave of mutilation was a good intro for me.These cuts are leaving creases. Trace the scars to fit the pieces, to tell the story, you don't need to say a word.0

Doolittle worked for me (Debaser specifically)...possibly more 'accessible' as a starting point than some of the stuff on Surfer Rosa?Try to tell me that you love me, throw your little punches at me...0

While I agree that Doolittle & Surfer Rosa are great starting points I would probably recommend Bossanova for a starting point... The reason being is it covers mostly all of their sounds on one album... You kind of get a flavor for everything... albiet w/ out a lot of familiar work (some hits here... maybe not familiar ones though)... it's almost like their version of Vitalogy... you kind of get a flavor for everything they are capable of in one shot...
From there I would go with Doolittle - which is arguably their best.... and then I would try out Surfer Rosa which is more abrasive... you could then check out their debut EP Come on Pilgrim if you want the full effect ... Trompe le Monde (their last album) is also more on the abrasive sounding side but I'd go w/ that one last simply because I think everything else is slightly better.
The only thing I really don't like about Bossanova & Trompe le Monde is that Kim Deal didn't have much to do w/ the writing process on those albums... but some people disliked her songs... I like them a lot... probably why I also enjoy The Breeders.
Hope that helped.0 -
Doolittle is more accessible.
Surfa Rosa is a bit experimental/abrasive
Both great albums.
The songs that got me into Pixies...
Here comes your man - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hvi4iA3PnKE (crazy riff)
Velouria - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PHhox4_S ... re=related
Awesome videos, very unique.

If I'm at a bar and UMASS is on the jukebox, I *must* play it, every time.
Seeing them reunite at Coachella in 2004 is one of my top concert memories."You're one of the few Red Sox fans I don't mind." - Newch91
"I don't believe in damn curses. Wake up the damn Bambino and have me face him. Maybe I'll drill him in the ass." --- Pedro Martinez0 -
Heh, a good friend of mine dated Kim Deal while he lived in Chile. He has some great stories of fun BBQ's with the Breeders

As for where to start, I'd lean towards Doolittle myself!Adolescence in essence is all about trust.
Leaving is for the answering machine.0 -

If you can find it, Death to the Pixies is a great compilation that comes with a killer live bonus disc."Hello Oregonians. Hello Washingtonians. Hello Portland..where the fuck are we? We're in Ridgefield!"0 -

kim didnt write anything for the pixies, well bam thwok was her first full credited song she wrote for the pixies and that was during the reunion in 04. gigantic was co-written and into the white was all frank black.
kim had a awesome voice that fit well with what frank black was doing but she wasnt even a bassist until she joined the band, she played guitar. this isnt meant to be a slam on kim cause i like her and the breeders are great too. but she didnt have much influence in the writing process of the pixies which is partly why she started the breeders and then frank didnt take to kind to that.
as for where to start surfer rosa. such a classic album. doolittle isnt bad either but ill take surfer rosa over doolittle any day.0 -
Doolittle or Surfer Rosa, definitely...
Then listen to Nirvana's Nevermind again -- tell me again how revolutionary Cobain was...

haha so true, Nevermind is like what would happen if Frank Black and John Lennon had a love child.{if (work != 0) {
work = work + 1;
sleep = sleep - work * 10;}
else if (work >= 0) {
reality.equals(false);
work = work +1;

listen to the replacements.....kurt stole more from the replacements than the pixies. by a mile. the replacements even have a song called nevermind. and the vocals at the end of cant hardly wait are typical cobain.

I also say Doolittle or Surfer Rosa as a starting point but my personal favorite is Trompe le Monde.E agora? Faz xixi na mão e deita fora!0

After re-listening to them following this thread, I'm going to change my mind -- start with Bossanova. Then go back to Doolittle & Surfer Rosa.

I got into these guys through the song "Gouge Away" many years ago. Surfer Rosa and Doolittle were the first 2 albums of theirs that I bought. Wave Of mutilation is a damn fine compilation album of theirs as well,"It's best to live in grace before you're forced to." EV- 10/09/20140
