Any Workout Junkies?? I need advice!

So I've started working out (again) and have been pretty good about it. Last night I started getting a backache and today I'm popping advil like crazy. Now, I had planned to go to the gym after work and I don't want to slack (as I admittedly have a tendency to do). So I guess my question is...should I suck it up and go...or take the night off? Will it make it worse? Or actually help stretch the muscles?

You need to take the day off. Other pains I will just try to work around. I don't mess with back pain. If you have been working your core a lot then it might just be sore or you might have pulled something. Either way, I would relax for the day and see how you feel tomorrow.0

have you considered spmething stronger?0

If you are that sore, then you are doing too much, too soon.
Take a day off, then go back to work, only do a less intense workout.
One of the biggest reasons people quit working out is because they get frustrated when they start to "feel the burn."
Take it easy, and if you are going to be working out regularly, try to add a little bit more protein to your diet, also consider eating a piece of fruit, or a handful of almonds before and after your workout. Also make sure you are drinking lots of water while you are working out. It will help keep you hydrated and keep your muscles from cramping."The dude abides. I don't know about you, but I take comfort in that. It's good knowin' he's out there. The Dude. Takin' her easy for all us sinners."0 -

Trust me...if I had something stronger I'd take it...that's how sore my back is.This is the greatest band in the world -- Ben Harper0 -
If your gym has a sauna you might just go sit in the sauna for a little while tonight. It will help get rid of some of the soreness. Also, eat a bananna or something else high in potassium. That will help too.0

I'm a nanny so naturally I spend the majority of my day lugging kids on my hip...it's really making my lower back hurt like a mofo. This is the greatest band in the world -- Ben Harper0 -

Awesome! Thanks.
P.S. Anyone want to email me a painkiller? That would help alot. This is the greatest band in the world -- Ben Harper0 -
You want to pay special attention to your posture, be sure to use your legs if you are getting up and down to pick up children, and you want to work on strengthening your abs which will help protect your back. (I"m a fitness instructor). I never think painkillers are a good idea unless a doctor has prescribed them, and never when you are going for a workout, because you don't want to mask pain. The pain is telling you something, maybe telling you to protect that body part and you don't want to ignore that signal. Really really suck in your abs hard at all times, and be sure you're not arching your back or slouching.R.i.p. Rigoberto Alpizar.

mer - didn't read the whole thread, but if you get in one of those days where you're sore as hell from running, lifting, whatever, then just go to the gym and stretch and WALK on the treadmill or track. You don't have to kill yourself every single day.
i am, of course, the proverbial pot/kettle.I love to turn you on0 -
actually, I've heard from many fitness people that the best thing to do when getting back into working out is to go hard for the first week then take a week off totally, then jump back in. I guess it gives your muscles time to adjust0
-
you need a night or two off.
i'd just do some stretching at home or something or go for a long walk.
people dont' realize just how much rest the body needs to recover from working out...www.myspace.com0 -

I agree...listen to "The End of Silence"....it will rev you up, but good!0 -
I would definitely take a day off..I didn't read the whole thread but based on your OP if you are having back pain it's your body telling you that your muscles are overexerted. These cuts are leaving creases. Trace the scars to fit the pieces, to tell the story, you don't need to say a word.0
