XP CD Rom issue/booting

Okay, so I'm trying to reinstall windows XP, and I know that I need to boot from the CD ROM to do so, but this time when I go into the bios to make the CD drive the 1st option, next to the drive it says "Not Present." The drive works fine, and when I boot normally I can see the disc in the drive, explore it, etc. If anyone has any idea what I can do to fix this, I'd appreciate it. Thanks.

This is so bizzare, can't really think of what to do, just thought i'd let you know at least one person has thought about it.

Have you tried the auto find in the bios?
  • Thanks for the response. No, I've never seen that feature. Where is that found and how does it work?

even if it says it cant be found, you can still go into it i think and like autofind or something like that.

Got any friends with an external dvd drive you could try?
  • uh, probably, but not any time soon. If you know how to do this autofind, please enlighten me. Thanks.

Is this an actual CD? If it's burned, chances are it's not bootable.

That's based on the activation key. He isn't even to that point yet.
  • I've never reinstalled on this machine before. The problem isn't the disc, which is the XP disc that came with the machine, but the drive, which shows up in the bios as "not present." Which I guess means it doesnt' show up in the bios. But the drive works fine once the PC is booted. Hope that helps.

Then you should try to get another internal or external dvd/cd drive

Make sure your DVD drive is primary and not slave.
