Showing my age..... Steve Winwood

I am guessing there are not a whole lot of Steve Winwood fans that hang around here beside me. Winwood is one of the most talented guys I have ever seen. Spencer Davis Group, Blind Faith, Traffic, solo stuff....even his stuff with the short lived band GO was great. Crossroads with Clapton, where he held his own swapping guitar solo's. You can listen to the song Dirty City w/ Clapton from his latest record at http://www.stevewinwood.com. He has done a lot.
Anyways, he is doing a short East Coast theater tour like Eddie did, except he is coming to my dinkie little hometown and our 1,500 seat theater. Maybe next time, Ed can stop here too.

This past fall, San Francisco hosted the outside Lands Festival ... and I was sad to miss his set.
But, he came up on stage with Tom Petty and they did "Gimme Some Lovin'" and "Can't Find My Way Back Home" ... which were SPECTACULAR!
He sounds amazing, I would recommend this concert to all PJ fans ..."You're one of the few Red Sox fans I don't mind." - Newch91

The Blind Faith album is simply one of the best records ever recorded...easily Top Ten. Arc of A Diver is also a wonderful album......got to love Stevie. All the world will be your enemy, Prince with a thousand enemies, and whenever they catch you, they will kill you. But first they must catch you, digger, listener, runner, prince with the swift warning. Be cunning and full of tricks and your people shall never be destroyed.0

saw him live a couple of years ago in Nottingham, i must have been one of the youngest at 28. Probably the best gig I've ever been to. The talent and voice of the guy is just amazing. I wasn't a huge fan when I went, just an admirer, but even though i didn't know a few songs i was just hit the how great it was.0

I saw steve winwood open for Tom Petty and he was just as good0

I usually feel too old for this place, and I'm 32. Ironically (as it seems the OP feels old for posting this), I feel young after seeing Winwood's name.
When I was ten I broke my ankle badly, and was forced to lay around the house for most of the first week while getting used to crutches. My parents asked me what new tape (there, NOW I feel old again) I wanted them to buy me as a consolation for being banged up and bedridden. I chose "Back in the High Life", which I now remember to be very, er, eighties sounding.
Apparently, I'm too young, because I missed most his really good stuff. Having only been familiar with his "hit" albums undervalues him in my mind, no matter how open minded I try to be (I do believe "Roll With It" holds up; not on the "High Life" record though).
So, to the OP, sometimes "showing your age" means "showing how awesome it used to be"."We've done really well with teenage death songs." -EV0 -
Well, you really did miss the great stuff.
Take a listen to this, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R2xRYw3D ... re=related
Listening to the chorus of this song, it sure sounds like Chris Cornell may have been influenced by Winwood.

steve w is da man!
my parents turned me on to Cream. i think that's my favorite band from that era. the sound is so raw. like pre metal raunch. let me shut up, i'm starting to sound silly.
eric clapton talks about him some in his book.*~Pearl Jam will be blasted from speakers until morale improves~*0 -
Man, what a great thread! Yeah Steve's new album "Nine Lives" is really good, has a very classic rock feel to it even though it's new.
Might I suggest Traffic's self-titled 2nd album for all who haven't heard it...it's WAAAAAY up there on my list of favorite albums. Not a single skippable track, the whole thing is just flat out fantastic.

"Low Spark of High-heeled Boys" is another dandy little album from Traffic. All the world will be your enemy, Prince with a thousand enemies, and whenever they catch you, they will kill you. But first they must catch you, digger, listener, runner, prince with the swift warning. Be cunning and full of tricks and your people shall never be destroyed.0

Down the street you can hear her scream youre a disgrace
As she slams the door in his drunken face
And now he stands outside
And all the neighbours start to gossip and drool
He cries oh, girl you must be mad,
What happened to the sweet love you and me had?
Against the door he leans and starts a scene,
And his tears fall and burn the garden green0 -

Saw Steve last August opening for Tom Petty. He is still such an amazingly talented performer and such a great vocalist although he downplays his own singing! I think he really knows how to use his voice well.0 -
Winwood tonight. His set lists have been heavy with Traffic. Can't wait.~!~ Peace ~!~ Love ~!~ Pearl Jam ~!~0

Let's not forget one of the other geniuses in the room laying down Voodoo Chile. I'm a guitar player and there are organ parts that make my head spin, in that one.
Recently got into vinyl. Picked up a lot of records and there was a Traffic album in there. It was the one with a corners notched out of the album cover. Evening Blue is just a fantastic tune off of it. Coincidentally, I heard it years ago on a Chris Robinson/Marc Ford bootleg, and never had a clue where it came from. I played the album on a whim and immediately recognized it. That was a pretty cool find, for me.
I may slap that on here, afterbit.0 -
I think my dad may be the biggest Steve Winwood fan ever. I distinctly remember him jamming out on his Blind Faith and Traffic records with his buddies. He even liked the Back in the High Life album and his new solo stuff. I always dug his stuff too but never bought any of the albums. I might have to look for some vinyl though...0

Well he did not disappoint. It was a rather predictable setlist, but the small setting (1500 seat theater), and being in the 10th row left me feeling great. Steve still brings it and he is really a master of the B3. He held the bass line down with the foot pedals, no bass player in the band. So, here he is holding the bass line, jamming on the keys and singing his heart out. He is a talented man.
I would not pass up an opportunity to see a living legends who can still deliver the goods like Steve does.~!~ Peace ~!~ Love ~!~ Pearl Jam ~!~0
