Hi genevieve, good to see you around. Hope everything is right. Bittorrent is actually pretty complicated when it comes to finding out why it's not working. Could be unopened ports, bad torrent, slow swarm, the wrong client. A good source is the Azureus wiki. I'll try coming up with the link.
Edit: It doesn't need to be slow, if you tune your computer accordingly it can go pretty good although not as fast a direct DLs

depends on how many peers do you have on that torrent. Few peers (less than 10), slow download; lots of peers, fast download.

The benefit of bittorrent is that things can be shared with distributed bandwidth. Everybody contributes to the giving and taking of bits so nobody has to set up a central server and spend a lot of money on bandwidth to serve people. The downside is that speeds can vary considerably. But since you're getting something for free, your only real costs are time and computer resources.

He's right. I use azureus as well and it's running very smoothly for bt standards. I've tried other clients and wasn't able to open my ports with them even though everything wasi dentical comp-wise except the client.
And he's right about the ports, you sometimes need to work around both the software firewall AND the rooter.

The problem seems to be the type of internet we use.
Its a wireless thing. From a local tower. We live in the
country and cant have highspeed. Dialup takes forever.
So I guess for some reason(that I dont understand)
we cant share the way it normally works. We cant
open all the ports and everything. We will maybe
just have to be patient. Ant more tips will help though.
Certain internet provider may block certain ports but I doubt that that's the case. But I guess you're hubby is pretty knowledgeable about this stuff so if he's read the wiki and hasn't got it going yet that's not a good sign. Which client do you use?

The private ip address shouldnt keep others from connecting with you, private ips are pretty standard. What you could do is trying azureus, there you can specifically choose which port you want to open, you just need to open it on your router (in case youre using one) and on thw windows firewall. if it doesnt work then (you can check if youve correctly opened it through this link I gave you earlier) you might indeed have a problem with your provider blocking ports.
