I am looking to start 4 different websites. 3 vBulliten message boards and one selling photgraphy. I'm looking for a reliable, affordable provider. any suggestions?

if a hosting company has alot of customers cant it afford to buy more powerful servers and bandwidth? hence giving cheaper packages with tons of space and speed? these companies seem to be so far apart on pricing and what they offer.

i use http://www.kazix.com for my hosting of http://www.notthebradys.com.

It's pretty good. Reliability is good, response time is decent, price is great. It's great for my personal site. If you decide to go with them, mention my website as a referrer. You can only host one site per account. But you get unlimited email accounts, you can create subdomains, you get unlimited MySQL, and they use CPanel so there are lot's of extras you can install.

I setup a free account with https://www.bello-monitors-the.net/ to monitor my site. It checks the status every hour and sends me an email if the site is down or respoding slow.

Adhost is exceptional.
You get what you pay for.
Scenerio #1: 11.00 per month. Cheap Virtual host. four layers and 24 hours later you get tech support. If you know your stuff (DNS, MX etc, etc) then you can manage yourself. If not..... Limited growth ability.
Also, who knows which leased/shared server your data is on?

Scenerio #2:
Company like adhost: you know where they are, you know they work, you know where your data is and you get a trained, full-time human when you call/email. Unlimited growth ability.

These are two very different types of "hosts." You need to decide on which type you want.

I agree with you. thanks for posting. I am a firm believer in you get what you pay for. then it kills me when people with cheap plans never have a problem.

but I dont think I will be going that way. I am starting 4 websites. 3 of which will be vBullietin message baords and one selling photography. I cant risk cheap hosts.

F5hosting.com (anyone ever hear or use them?) is another top recommended one but I also like the sounds of adhost.

Wow that does sound like a good deal.

I don't have a website anymore, but when I did, I know this guy in Vancouver that is a major player in a web-hosting company. The nice thing about having a friend in the bussiness is changes get made real fast. Usually there are a few other perks as well.

Set up your own server, request a static ip with your ISP and go, no more reason to complain about anything other than your ISP (or, ... your own lack of knowledge

)

You could also use no-ip and then redirect from a free domain name to your no-ip ....
Just screw around with some header locations and stuff ....

Well, so far for the cheap-ass way
If you can afford a decent hosting service, do it (you could also finance them by putting up ads -limited in amount plz- from people you know have a shop or so)

So many options, so few really do suffice our every need

I thought about this but I dont know SQL and do not trust myself to set it up correctly.

i'm budgeting for about 20 bucks a month with a reliable hoster.

That truly is a tough nut to bust sometimes, but if you just follow some tuts on how to set up your own WAMP - or LAMP server.... it's do-able.
Just get the binary packages of apache, mysql or oracle or whatever and php, then edit the config files, move some files around, ... if it works, yay!, if it doesn't, start over, follow another one.

In the meantime, you're learning how it's done and you are yet a bit more valuable in the world of IT

SQL is easy. If you understand even basic syntax or something like DOS it's simple.

For example, if you want to get something from a database and you already have it open. You can do SELECT which initiates the selection command, then WHERE followed by a column name, say you had a database of cars with a column name of OEM, then you say an operand like EQUALS and the specific value you are looking for. So:

SELECT WHERE OEM EQUALS FORD

Something like that, anyway that's the syntax basically. It's really easy. If you know PHP, I suggest the PHP, MySQL, Apache Trio. There are plenty of guides for installation and use of that combo.

But he said he didn't trust setting it up himself..... and I must admit I've had my share of trouble with it as well

Oh ok, I didn't realize that's what WAMP or Lamp is. It's was just called the trio when I used it. But I suppose WAMP refers to Windows Apache MySQL PHP and LAMP refers to the same on Linux. very interesting. I did this almost 5 years ago and only until my project was complete. That's how I know it's easy to pick-up.

I just successfully set up a server on my laptop

Not quite sure if the sql-part is working correctly though, no time to test it, but everything sould work now
