                    that should say
MY CD/DVD-Rom drive disappeared, and the CD/DVD Burner too
been burning discs all day, and all of a sudden, they're gone. I put a disc in, and nothing happens. I've tried re-booting, and nothing happens. Anyone know what to do before I call Dell and spend 3 ours on hold to speak to "Robert" in India?

Try My Computer > View System > Hardware > Device Manager and click on "DVD/CD-Rom Drives" and scan to see if there's any changes.
That happened to me once- they never actually disappeared, just got disabled somehow.PJ- 04/29/2003.06/24,25,27,28,30/2008.10/27,28,30,31/2009

It could be an Upper/Lower filters problem in the registry. Its been happening alot with Toshiba laptops, the drives dissapear until you delete the registry keys for the filters.I'm spinning, oh, I'm spinning

this was a big help, thanks. Haven't fixed it yet, but you were right on. There's a big ! next to them, and it says the drivers aren't working. I just downloaded an update for ITUnes/Apple which I don't even use, I wonder if that fried it.0

thanks. I found the solution using google, sone tech chat board. It happened due to ITunes. I DL'ed the update yesterday, and that's what caused the registry to be corrupted0

Once when this happened to me, it turned out the internal power connector was bent. It must have been that way since I installed it when I changed computers a few months before, but it had been working off and on. I used a different connector on the cord and then it was fine. So for someone else with a similar problem, it could be because of the power connector or the power cable itself.
