    Rant in E Minor was my bible a while back. listened again the other day. Just amazing. More than anything, any comic skill or whatever, Bill has such an energy. It must have been so hard living like that, so driven to intense negativity in the hope of things getting better. He was just a very moral man with a personality that didn't fit that of someone who can get by in this world. Fuck pancreatic cancer, Bill killed Bill.

    I dont know if Bill killed himself...he was sober after a few years of getting known...he smoked well into the late 80s and soon quit in 90.(and jokingly told people the reason he quit was to see if Denis Leary was going to copy him)

    Unless his anger killed him..I dont agree with that assesment

    Let's be honest, it was the smoking and drink that gave him the cancer, whether he quit or not, the damage was done. I was just saying that it must have taken its toll on him, that whole angry, intense, possessed persona, doing it day in day out, always giving 110% because anything less would have been a cop-out to him. When you hear recordings of those legendary shows when he was still drinking and people would heckle him, the sheer vitriol from Bill just seems overwhelming. There's some footage, the infamous "Hitler had the right idea, he was just an underachiever" show when Bill, after screaming and going insane at the woman in the audience, just drops to the stage exhausted. He makes it part of the stage act but I wonder sometimes how much it got to him, being so pissed off all the time.

    I have to say though, I'm glad he was so pissed off. The guy was brilliant in my opinion, not just a great comic but a great person who I would loved to have met.

    Bill didnt drink.....it was part of his act for years...he smoked....but never drank. And I know this cause I knew Bill...use to see him when he lived in Houston almost weekly. Working on his bit with Sam Kinnison

    Well according to several books I read, Bill attended AA meetings for years and embraced various spiritual teachings to help him with his drinking problem, and I'm not not talking about stuff I heard him say on stage as part of his show, I'm talking about the testament of his close friends, one of whom went to the meetings with him. There are stories of all kinds of things that he did because he drank too much, flipping out at shows in the mid 80s and getting banned from clubs for it, alienating any females who got close to it. I'm not saying it's all true but it can't all be made up.

    I've also heard Bill saying "I don't drink or do drugs, I used to. I had to stop drinking because I would drink A LOT".

    Kevin Booth, one of Bill's best friends: "When he got into alcohol, he did tons of alcohol. That was the worst."

    When did you know him? According to wikipedia, his alcoholism started around 1983 and he quit in the late 80s. He was known for being militantly anti-alcohol throughout his teenage years and would mock people for drinking but that all changed when he started getting on the comedy circuit apparently.

    I knew(more like met him) him before he moved to NYC .....which was sometime in 87 if Im not mistaken.

    While if Kevin Booth said there were issue with alcohol...the Bill I knew didnt drink. So I stand corrected cause Kevin knew him best.

    As a teenager I lived down the street from the Comedy Workshop where Bill started at in Houston. I had the chance to see him there and at the Laugh Stop down the street numerous times as he would come back to Houston and work on his bit. Apparently Houston was one of the few places in the Us that truly appreciated Bill's humor(suprisingly) and always welcomed him with open arms. As for his drug use...theres a funny story about Bill and Sam Kinnison here in houston locked up in a bathroom at the Laugh Stop and refused to come out as they were trying to finish the cocaine they had just bought...it must have been a ton cause it took an hour or two before they came out to perform....yet they never performed!


    and on this same note...I see you're from London....did you ever see Bill there??? I know he loved working there as the UK was much more receptive to him than the Americans were

    Oh unfortunately I'm far too young to have seen Bill. I think a 6 year old would have been out of place at a Hicks stand-up show :) Although I know you are now going to question what I have said before because of that but trust me, 19 years old or not, I know a fair bit about Bill :) It's cool that you got to meet him though. My uncle saw him in Edinburgh at the fringe and he was at the Oxford show that was released on CD. He told me about him when I was much younger, probably only a year or so after he died but I didn't care much back then. It's one of these sad things I missed out on.

    your age has no bearing on my thoughts of you....I know many young men and women who are far wiser than their age and dont judge anyone because of that.


    Cool stuff bout your dad....I really was lucky to see and know Bill at a time when I really was only goin to see comedians cause I could get in...I didnt drink or do drugs at that age(this was in high school) but I loved comedy then..and still do, although nobody has ever come along like Bill.
