Avoiding steady drinking and drinking in excess during pregnancy should be a no-brainer.
well I apologise for jumping into that one too early. I think I was under the impression people were implying that pregnant women shouldn't drink at all... and I was just disagreeing with that.
If you drink lots and often during pregnancy... well there's a word for that... alcoholism... and it shouldn't be frowned upon but helped. But other than that, I know too many people that think it irresponsible and disgusting for a pregnant woman to even be IN a pub

since when? I read recently that a glass or two of wine here and there is just fine!
I'm a midwife, and the current recommendation is to avoid alcohol altogether. Recent research is suggesting that even small amounts of alcohol can be harmful, since brain development continues into childhood and beyond. Since it's difficult to measure when the effects are most pronounced, or at what volume of consumption damage can occur, the advice health professionals are giving these days is to err on the side of caution.0 -

of course they're gonna say to avoid it altogether... cos they don't know. I would agree with erring on the side of caution... but I seriously doubt there's any evidence to back a glass or two here and there leading to fetal alcohol syndrome.Medicated-Genius wrote:I'm a midwife, and the current recommendation is to avoid alcohol altogether. Fetal alcohol syndrome isn't the only effect of alcohol consumption in pregnancy though. FAS occurs in babies whose mothers consumed a lot of alcohol fairly consistently throughout pregnancy, particularly the first trimester. These children are born with all the appearences of a chromosomal abnormality, are usually mentally disabled to varying degrees, have behavioural disorders, learning disorders etc.
The argument is that more subtle brain damage can occur. Children with none of the classic physical characteristics of FAS, but with learning disabilities, behavioural problems and the like. It's easy to assume that alcohol in small quantities is harmless, because it's such a socially accepted part of our society, but the reality is that it's as dangerous a drug as any other, and consuming even a small amount in pregnancy can be harmful.0 -

I was at the christening of a girl I worked withs son once... she came from a lovely family... such great people if you're in the good books, if you're not they're not so great... and same with their friends, neighbours, family whatever! Anytime I went out for a cigarette I was surrounded by half drunk heavily pregnant 17/18 year olds chain smoking  I was quite embarrassed for themblackredyellow wrote:hahahaha

Sadly there are a lot of women who drink during their pregnancy and think its okay or just don't care. I know of one myself who got wasted at a superbowl party. She's 3 or 4 months pregnant and goes out every weekend drinking and smoking. Why even bother having a kid when you're going to screw them up before they are even born?"I'll ride the wave where it takes me.."0

I agree that society (mistakenly) thinks it has the right to control women once they become pregnant. In my medical ethics class last semester we discussed a case of a pregnant woman being denied ENTRANCE to a bar because of her pregnancy. I think that's fucked up. You don't lose your rights just because you become pregnant.
Also, however, I would think that as a bartender I would have the right to refuse to do something that made me feel uncomfortable - like serving a pregnant woman, whether or not she was already drunk.
Personally, I agree with erring on the side of caution and not drinking at all during pregnancy. What scares me is all the drinking I might do in the first trimester before I realize I'm pregnant. (Obviously I'm taking serious precautions to not get pregnant, but I'm just sayin'...)0 -

right. though avoiding alcohol altogether during pregnancy is the current recommendation, it's not like this recommendation is something new or unheard of, since it was the recommendation back in '85 when i was pregnant with my first kidlet and even before that time. plus it's one of the first things that midwives and ob's and other medical professionals tell a woman on her very first visit to them.
it's not like this woman could not have known that she was putting her fetus/baby at some risk of serious danger.*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
