wow, I was married to one, so I don't know. most people say that it is when alcohol is interfering with your life, job, marriage, etc. but that is kind of fucked up because there are so many tolerant people in the world that don't address the drinking problems in their lives. my husband's whole family has substance abuse all throughout them and they still act like that whole "elephant in the living room" bs. crazy ass.

  • something like this, according to the DSM-IV (which is basically the psychologist handbook)

"...maladaptive alcohol use with clinically significant impairment as manifested by at least three of the following within any one-year period: tolerance; withdrawal; taken in greater amounts or over longer time course than intended; desire or unsuccessful attempts to cut down or control use; great deal of time spent obtaining, using, or recovering from use; social, occupational, or recreational activities given up or reduced; continued use despite knowledge of physical or psychological sequelae."

    somone who goes to meetings?

    Damn...

I read all these posts... planning to write JUST THAT.

And you did. The last poster before me. ;)

Yeah. Someone who goes to meetings.

    That's the answer.

Or someone who would drink a Guinness out of a pig's arse. ;)

That person MAY qualify without going to meetings... But I'm not so sure. :)

I always have a drink with dinner usually two everyday. Either wine or beer. By the text book I would be one. ;)
I wonder how many people have seen the "text book" definition of alcoholism...I think people would be shocked...the list of questions, to which if you answer yes to any one you are considered an alcoholic...the list as I recall includes questions like "have you ever had a drink before noon", "do you drink until the bottle is empty"...etc.

I think by these definitions most of adult society would be defined as alcoholic.

I judge that by how the person handles it. I have one friend who drinks beer every night basically, several drinks sometimes but no more than 3 or 4 on a typical night. Then i have another friend who is one who starts drinking early in the day -- he is two weeks on and two weeks off from work -- and by the evening time he is completely useless. The second one, to me, has a problem. While the first one may depend on alcohol to some extent he doesn't abuse it.

As for me, the older I have gotten I have limited my drinking to the weekend. But, when Friday rolls around its an all out drunk fest until I go to bed in the wee hours of Sunday morning. On Saturdays, I never drink during the day, wait until the evening, but once I start drinking I will not stop until every beer is gone. Basically, if I don't have to go to work the next morning I get drunk, but I have never, except once, allowed drinking to interfere with my work
All I have to do is revel in the everyday....then do it again tomorrow

They say every sin is deadly but I believe they may be wrong...I'm guilty of all seven and I don't feel too bad at all
