How awesome is that? I am fond of those little plastic boxes to put sandwiches in, but this is adorable. I found a site that shows me how to make my own!

great thread idea! i haven't any ideas that come to mind other than the typical stuff like bringing my own bag and planning errands to minimize driving around. i'll be sure to keep an eye on this for suggestions though 0 0

I like those little plastic boxes too...I try to reuse plastic bags from the grocery store..I try not to run the water too much. When I brush my teeth I shut the faucet off..I try to reduce my showers too.
One of my pet peeves is littering and waste...I hate when people throw away good food. These cuts are leaving creases. Trace the scars to fit the pieces, to tell the story, you don't need to say a word.0

2 things my mom has always done and although it wasn't for environmental concerns but for $$$...mom is always trying to save money
reuse envelopes....like the ones you get from junk mail....just block out the printing with your own....also the big manilla envelopes too...
the other is to use the backs of use 8 1/2 x 11 paper....if your printing say a draft of something, use the back of paper that's been used 0 0

we tend to think a lot about short-term waste, e.g. paper, bottles, etc when we think about reduce/reuse/recycle. But also consider this axiom while consuming larger objects- clothing, furniture, electronics...0

While you're recycling envelopes, save the used stamps and send them to Amnesty International. They use them to raise funds.A human being that was given to fly.

Freecycle is awesome..I have been using them for a couple of years.
I am trying to teach my son that recycling is good and reusing is even better.
I just bought him a little Teletubbies suitcase from the thrift store. He thinks it's cool. I told him it was retro. lol
I had given his other suitcase to the same thrift store and he flipped out when he realized it. It is an awesome store. All of the profits go to the battered women's shelter. A great cause and a great price and nothing to add to the ole carbon footprint.Cause I'm broken when I'm lonesome

I got a lovely plastic bag from Ikea that I'm using when I go do errands, to try to cut down on the plastic bags from the stores. Also Cameron Diaz said during that Earth Concert, or whatever it was called, the one with Al Gore last year, that you can save energy by unplugging your cell phone charger after you are done with it (instead of leaving it plugged in all the time)"...like a word misplaced, nothing said, what a waste.."

Oh yeah, with the charger...it totally sucks up energy just sitting there.Allie wrote:I got a lovely plastic bag from Ikea that I'm using when I go do errands, to try to cut down on the plastic bags from the stores. I try to unplug things when I am not using them.
My biggest challenge is turning off my computer. Even if it is sleeping, it is still using up electricity. Even if it is sleeping, it is still using up electricity.
I love those plastic sacs from Ikea...I even have the mini one.
I have soosoooo many cloth bags. At least finally baggers aren't looking at me like I am crazy for bringing them.
My fave is one that says Paper? Plastic? Neither.Cause I'm broken when I'm lonesome

In addition to unplugging chargers, you should put major appliances/electronics (TV, Stereo, computer, AC, Microwave, etc) on power strips and turn off the power strip when you're not using them (or unplug them, but the power strip can be easier). These appliances lose energy just while plugged in even if the power is off.0

How to Save Money on Alcohol at Bars
(j/k but I thought alot of AET posters would benefit)
 Instructions
 Step 1:
If someone else is driving or you are taking a taxi, then having a couple of your favorite drinks at home first can help you to drink less at the bar.
 Step 2:
Drink draft beer, it is usually cheaper than bottled beer. In many bars you actually get more beer in a draft then you do in a bottle. If you are with friends, buy draft beer by the pitcher instead of by the glass for more money savings.
 Step 3:
Attend Happy Hour if bars still have them in your area, some states have outlawed Happy Hour. Most bars offer deep discounts on alcoholic drinks during Happy Hour.
 Step 4:
Buy Long Island Iced Teas if you are looking for the most alcohol for your money. A Long Island Iced Tea is made with five different alcohols and only a splash of cola.
 Step 5:
Order house rum or house vodka with a soda of your choice. If you do not specify that you want the house alcohol the bartender will use a brand name and charge you much more for the drink.
 Step 6:
Carry a flask with alcohol in it. Order a soda at the bar and add your own alcohol to save money. Be careful if you decide to do this though, as most bar owners do not want patrons bringing in their own alcohol for obvious reasons.
 Step 7:
Avoid cover charges. Some bars will charge you just to walk in the door. Going to bars that do not charge a cover charge will help to keep the cost of the evening0

I do this too. I put all the kitchen appliances on a strip (coffee maker toaster and nuke). Anything with a little light or clock totally wastes energy when just sitting there.CityMouse wrote:In addition to unplugging chargers, you should put major appliances/electronics (TV, Stereo, computer, AC, Microwave, etc) on power strips and turn off the power strip when you're not using them (or unplug them, but the power strip can be easier). I also have not been using the clothes dryer at all this summer. Line dried only.
Also started a little garden this year! Tomatoes, peppers, pumpkins and herbs.
Edit- PS: tanks for the tips about drinking at bars, not. I dont bother with them, save money by drinking at home and posting on this board. LOL4/11/94 Boston Garden 9/26/96 Augusta Maine

Hey, another tip...if anyone in the UK likes a tastey drop of cider ocassionally, buy it at ASDA instead of the pub, they have some great unusual ones on sale at £1 a bottle they would cost you over £3 in a pub they would cost you over £3 in a pub
 and then you can recycle the bottle I came, I saw, I concurred.....0 I came, I saw, I concurred.....0
