Shetland:A god forsaken place, and I'm used to and prefer the cold but I hope I never have the misfortune to experience a rain soaked, flat, deathly grey place like that again.

I'm right there with the two of you. Amazingly cold here in Upstate NY. Once when I was a kid we came back from St. Croix - 80 degrees to -28 in one day. A change of more than 100 degrees!

    -40 fahrenheit is -40 celsius i think.
i know the conversion table freakls out at some point
    and the conversion pattern changes.

    anyhow,

-40f in the late 70's in northeast iowa.
    2007 december driving a semi-truck to/from Alaska.
the Yukon was -40f when we were broke down.
numb hands and feet just about instantly.

-40 is the same in both Fahrenheit and Celsius. To calculate the conversion from Fahrenheit to Celsius, use the following formula:

    °F to °C - Deduct 32, then multiply by 5, then divide by 9
    °C to °F - Multiply by 9, then divide by 5, then add 32

  • I lived in Vermont for 4 years and experienced many subzero days. I do remember driving one time (not sure how my car worked) when it was -20F without the windchill.

I don't miss the VT winters. Loved the skiing, but the really cold weather just wore me out.

One time it was one of those butt-cold nights and I went to open my car door. After I unlocked it, the door wouldn't budge. With a few slight tugs I ripped the door handle off. It was that brittle.
  • Coldest I've ever been was while fighting an apartment house fire on a cold night in January in NJ. I was drenched and when I walked outside to our fire engine all my turn out gear froze up. Had to go back in the building for a while to get thawed.

Not sure exactly, but the wife and I snow camp in the mountains of Central Idaho in the dead of winter, so... Basically, you dig a snow cave and hope for the best.

Chicago. Last winter. For about 2 straight weeks it did not get above 10 degrees, regular temperature. With the wind chill, it was well below 0... for TWO STRAIGHT WEEKS!!
Back in high school I remember it hit -20 something.. They actually closed school for a day.

I went to Minnesota once. It's definitely about 10 degrees colder there on average.
