Of course... but if the police believe that even the wife didn't know... then there really is no way the neighbours coulda known. I mean think about a neighbouring family... the daughter goes missing at 11 and they go through absolute hell. Then they get news from her that she's ok but isn't coming home. Then suddenly she has these kids but doesn't want them any more so the grandparents adopt them... as they would! Of course it all sounds fucked up... but it sounds like the KID'S fucked up... not the parents. Neighbours said they were wondering what kinda mother could do that... drop her kids off and leave!

I'm not blaming the neighbors or wife for this. I'm just saying it's a shame that this unusual situation of a supposedly missing girl dropping her unwanted kids off and then disappearing again didn't raise a red flag in someone's mind. It's an unusual situation, to say the least, and maybe one that should have triggered some further investigation.

But like I said, I think it is human nature to be more concerned with your own well-being than that of your neighbors. It is certainly the societal norm to "mind your own business".

I kind of think that this one of the biggest problems of modern society. I don't think it's human nature. there are many cultures (even our own in the past) that placed much more value on community and systems rather than individual families.
  • This guy deserves to be buggered by the real Devil until he dies.

Well, I think it's human nature to look out for yourself and your basic needs first, and as modern conveniences/lifestyles make that easier and we are more and more self-sufficient, we are able to become more self-centered and, therefore, isolated.

death penalty will be act of kindness as another poster said, locking him up in the basement and raping him by the guy named Rick :D - unfortunately we don't have sufficient time to cause enough damage.

how about slow painful death with mind games.....the kind you see in Saw movie....and how about finally finishing him off by slowly slicing off his skin?...........

i find it hard to believe in this story too,i mean he had to provide enough food to keep his daughter and their children alive and i'm sure a lot of money would go towards that kind of upkeep. also he kept two grown up children, one who was guy,how exactly did he control them??? with handcuffs?? cause we are talking about an old dude controlling 3 people, not including the 5 year old?? how the hell did they not rebel or try to get out?
and how could this sicko be so stupid as to let one of this older daughter go to hospital?

few things just don't tie up together...he can be smart enough to keep 4 people in his basement, yet he was not smart enough about hospital issue?
if he is so sick in the head why did he let his daughter get hospital threatment?

right, he let one of those twins die of neglect... it doesn't add up.

I don't think we should be looking for logic to play into this guys actions.

i don't think irrational person would be able to hide a secret like this one for 24 years! psychotic people slip up easily, therefore i am lead to believe that he was of a sound mind. therefore i have no option but to look at it logically, what if it's a made up story, or what if more people where involved in this?
it is very sick and sad what happened to all of them, but we cannot let our anger and emotions get in the way of thinking about it, and looking at this from a different prospective.

and how did he choose who was to live with him and who was to live in the basement? did he actually sit down and work out how much keeping in the basement certain number of people will cost him?

i just think if he was so evil why didn't he just let them all live there and die there,......cause by that time he's already done them so much damage that actually letting them die was not as evil of him.

i hope people can get my point in here.

ok but I think we can find some explanations. as for the children locked in the basement- if they'd been there since birth, they wouldn't know anything different...if their mother didn't say anything, they wouldn't know there was even a world above them...
