The 'I *should* like them, but they drive me nuts!' thread

Does anyone have anyone in their lives who *on paper* they should really like... they're nice, friendly, and like you a lot.. but they just wind you the hell up?

My auntie and uncle... they're round for dinner and I had to leave the table they were annoying me so much.
'We're learning songs for baby Jesus' birthday. His mum and dad were Merry and Joseph. He had a bed made of clay and the three kings bought him Gold, Frankenstein and Merv as presents.'

    Yes, everyone has aunties and uncles that piss them off. But then they die, and I start thinking, maybe they seemed annoying because they were old fashioned, principled people with set views, and I was a young know-it-all, who should have been more understanding and charitable to them in spite of all their perceived imperfections. We're none of us perfect, and older family members might often harbour views or display mannerisms we find distasteful, but we should strive towards tolerance of one another.

    They're both in their fourties.. hardly 'older'.. but they are totally and utterly career obsessed.

    Still, they're mortal. You can see beyond their scope of values, however loud they are in imposing them upon others. Shit, if I listened to those people I would have stopped writing/making music/painting/doing anything creative, over twenty years ago. If you've self belief, their opinions are just opinions, however loudly expressed. Find a way of changing the dinner subject, or turn the telly up loudly. (That's what my dad does with irritating guests: he puts the horse racing channel on at full blast! :D)

    I have learned this rule.

    You have to accept people for who they are,

    like with you for instance on hear. I used to argue with you on here alot,and get pissed, but honestly your points feed of most of mine and usually turn into good debates, and I end up seeing things from a differant perspective. know I usually read evrything you post, if I agree or not. I respect them.

    I often have conflicts of personality with people who I know are decent enough but we just don't get on. Every time I'm back home during uni holidays I seem to see my english teacher from A-levels and if I acknowledge him he tends to ignore me. we had a sort of mutual dislike of each other even though I was top of his class for two years, got As in all 6 units of A-levels and even had similar music tastes to him. Something just didn't click. I have finally given up on trying and when I see him now I sort of mock him a bit. Something about one of his ex-students who he clearly hates calling him "Perry" instead of "Sir" really seems to irk him :p It makes me feel better though. For 2 years I tried to please the guy even though I didn't like him. He makes no such concessions.

    My inlaws, but they never gave me a chance when I was dating my wife, over the years I have given up trying to get along now I just don't bother with them, not worth the effort, life is to short. To the best of my knowledge they never liked me because I smoked and like to drink and would use colorful language (but never around them). Go figure that out.

    Boy, I feel this way about a couple people. A very nice friend, shes never given me a reason not to like her, but I just dont like being around her. :(

    What really bothers me is I feel this way about my mom. Shes really nice, but when im around her I just want to not be around her. I just get really annoyed by almost everything she does, like im just looking for reasons to dislike her. I hate this, I have no idea why I feel this way. :(

    i feel the same way about my mom a lot of the time. it doesn't help that she makes it a point to disagree with almost everything i say, even if what i say is not even an opinion. i love her to death, but i find it so hard to enjoy being around her.

    Yes I know what you mean. The manager of the co-op in my small town. On paper, we agree about a lot of things (healthy food, buy local, organic, recycle...that sort of thing), and I'm sure we have similar views politically, but he creeps me out for some reason, to the point that whenever possible I plan my shopping there for when I know he probably won't be around. I don't understand why, but he just weirds me out. I think these sort of things are probably at a primordial chemistry level.

    actually, this reminds me of when you start college and they send you that questionnaire to match you up with a roommate. there were SO MANY pairs of roommates who were complete opposites, yet you could totally see how the college matched them up by looking at a questionnaire.

    I seem to keep inexplicably running into pointless fights with my mum.. over nothing. I'll make a statement in a conversation - a blanket statement, a hyperbolic statement - and she'll go NUTS and I'll be like 'What?' We were talking about Aspartame being dangerous.. She was telling my little sister that it was (despite the fact that she bought 3 bottles of diet drink the other day).
