  • hmm...interesting helen. the movies i like the best are ones i can relate to. ones that draw some sort of emotion from me. be it anger or empathy.

i thought sideways was bullshit too. but then again i think the whole wine appreciation/ afficiando crapola thingy is a total wankfest. but there you go. just drink the damn stuff will you. *she says as she takes a sip from her wineglass half full of merlot* :p:D

thomas haden church was so goddamn annoying in that film. and as for paul giametti... i'm sorry but after watching him in big fat liar countless times with my kids, i can not see him in any other role. :D
:D but it was the whole snobbery thing that I really found funny... so it's weird that we all look for different things in films... well I guess it's not really but ya know what I mean. it's all opinion. I just didn't find there was anything TO relate to in lost in translation though :o .
    The Astoria??? Orgazmic!
    Verona??? it's all surmountable
Dublin 23.08.06 "The beauty of Ireland, right there!"
    Wembley? We all believe!
Copenhagen?? your light made us stars
    Chicago 07? And love
    What a different life
Had I not found this love with you

i find snobbery of any kind highly amusing. must be the irish in me. :D

youve never been lonely helen? youve never wanted someone to just be there for you? youve never been taken for granted? youve never been an ageing hollywood star trying to keep his end in by doing commercials in a foreign country. :D

I've been all but one of those... nobody takes me for granted :p

Lol, of course I've been lonely and wanted someone to be there for me and I have been taken for granted... but I still didn't feel like I had anything in common with those 'characters'. Fuck, I've more in common with Julia Roberts in Pretty woman than Scarlett Johanssens character in Lost in translation.

    yip!! :o
oh scary... 40000 morbidly obese christians wearing fanny packs invading europe is probably the least scariest thing since I watched an edited version of The Care Bears movie in an extremely brightly lit cinema.

you see pretty woman as a chick flick?

the woman is a whore and the only way she finds legitimacy is through a man...a rich man. tis horseshit helen, utter horseshit. i found no redeeming qualities at all. ALL woman should be condemning this film.

That is the best response to a feminist attack on a film I have ever read :D

Aw you shouldn't have turned off sideways... I can see why it MIGHT be boring to some until a certain point but the last half hour or so is bloody hilarious.

I agree. It all makes sense near the end. It becomes really funny in the last 30 minutes and you get to understand the characters a lot more.

REALLY????????????? Wow - 3 great movies IMO. It doesn't get much better than Pulp Fiction (probably my second favorite movie - behind American Beauty)

I found it really boring. I thought it was so overly conscious of itself and so overblown and hyped. There was no depth to it. It was like bubble gum, or a macdonalds. You gorge your senses on it and then feel really icky and none the wiser after the event.
Reservoir dogs was raw, and visceral entertainment. Pulp fiction was just mental junk food.

i have only ever turned 2 movies off in my life.. Sideways was one... i never even smirked during that movie.. thought it was pretentious shite... and that hot wine women would never go for Giamatti... he was a snivelling wreck in that movie... unbearable :(

Magnolia is my other one i couldnt watch!!! bored me to death
That was the point...it was poking fun at the pretentious wine culture. lol
That is what I found so hysterical about it. That there really are people out there like that.
But I can appreciate your distaste. :)

    :D Thank you :)

Byrnzie I have to agree with you on Pulp Fiction... it just tries too hard to be cool... and like Hitch hiker said in another thread, I think Jackie Brown is WAY better than any of his other films. I'm not a big Tarantino fan at all. If something TRIES to be cool, it isn't! :o In my opinion of course.

Me too... I think I found it entertaining enough but it left absolutely no impression on me whatsoever.

In my top 5 of all time. If you haven't already, read the book. I never appreciated the film so as much until I read the book. Chuck Palahniuk's novel is better than the film but it brings a whole new appreciation to it. It fills in the holes a little. Divisive it is. Average it ain't.

  • Believe it or not, "The Shawshank Redemption". I'm in a huge minority since it's like #3 on IMDB.

I may get flayed alive for this but I thought it was really slow and boring while simultaneously crude and sappy.

I also fell asleep during "Lost in Translation." Bill Murray wasn't funny or even interesting and ScarJo wasn't hot. What's the point here?
    So this life is sacrifice...

I thought you were making good points until the end. Reservoir Dogs was way more of a mental junk food movie then Pulp Fiction. You have to remember that no movie looked like Pulp Fiction before it was released and now you get 10 copies every year but none of them can touch the original.
