Jimmy Fallon to replace Conan on "Late Night"

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - "Saturday Night Live" veteran Jimmy Fallon has sealed a deal to succeed "Late Night" host Conan O'Brien on NBC in 2009, sources said.

O'Brien, whose show airs at 12:35 a.m., is moving to Los Angeles next year to replace Jay Leno at "The Tonight Show," which airs an hour earlier.

NBC is expected to make the announcement on May 12 during its "upfront" presentation to advertisers in New York. The network declined comment on Thursday.

Fallon, 33, co-starred on "SNL" for six seasons, and co-hosted its "Weekend Update" segment. He left the show to focus on making features, although such efforts as "Fever Pitch" and "Taxi" fell flat at the box office.

Fallon's new gig as "Late Night" host stems from a development deal he signed with NBC in early 2007. He will probably stay at O'Brien's Studio 6A at New York's 30 Rock, although details have not been confirmed.

The move further cements NBC's late-night transition, which is making Leno a highly sought-after free agent. ABC and Fox are reportedly circling the top-rated comic, while NBC is trying to keep him in the company fold with a new show.

    Ugh. Talk about a step down in talent.


    Then again, a lotta folks probably said the same thing when Conesy took over from Dave. I just hope Conan gets to keep things a little bit crazy when he takes over from Jay.

    Me too. What's going to happen to the Masturbating Bear? :D I just can't imagine my aunt and uncle (who are faithful Leno watchers) getting into that kind of humor... :o

    Exactly - can you imagine that shitting duck from a while back reaching the airwaves in Leno's slot?:p

    All the zany, completely insane stuff that made me love Conan in the first place will likely be lost on the new audience.:( And what about the Max Weinberg 7? If they're not coming, it'll be like amputating the entire show...

    I have never been able to sit through a whole episode of the Tonight Show with Jay Leno. Now I can get my Conan a little earlier in the evening.
    Everything not forbidden is compulsory and eveything not compulsory is forbidden. You are free... free to do what the government says you can do.

    By far the best "house band" in television history. So immensely talented, and Max and Conan play off each other much better than any of the other combos out there.

    Like almost everyone else, my only fear is that the new timeslot will force the show to be so much tamer...it'll be like bottling Conan up instead of letting him loose.

    I like Jimmy. My only problem with him is that on SNL, he couldn't deliver lines with out laughing.....he would laugh before the line was even finished.

    Wow, I'm in the minority
    I like Leno, I think he's funny
    and I don't care for Conan at all

    and I also think Jimmy is really funny. I won't be watching the Tonight Show with Conan on it.
