The whole problem with this ending is Chase has said in the past when asked "will there ever be a reunion show of some sort?" He said NO and that this season would tie up everything and not leave any questions about the ending. What happened to that Mr. Chase? He took the easy way out... "I'll let the audience decide" WEAK.

Again, why so much focus on that waste of space, AJ? They should have blown him up in that stupid car of his.

You could argue that Chase thinks the viewers will see the ending as showing that Tony gets killed.

I agree the AJ story was too much this season. But I don't think the ending was a easy way out for Chase. As someone said he sucked us in at the end. Then BAM we are left to think on our own what happened. I think it was perfect IMO.

I always read that Chase never intended to tie it all up.

EXACTLY. I LOOOOOVED it. I can't believe anyone disliking it, but then again so many people think this is just simply a 'mob show' and watch it for the shootings and deaths. This show is impeccably written and executed. I have to admit that I set myself up to be let down by the ending, knowing how nearly impossible it would be to please all of our expectations. That said, I was on the edge of my seat for the last 10 minutes, constantly glancing at the clock wondering how this would play out, feeling dread at every instance, then BAM. Amazing. Maybe its the thinker in me, but I appreciated this ending so much more than had Tony been shot at the last second, or had the FBI barged in. There are so many underlying things going on with that last scene, it will stay with me for a long time. I still can't get that Journey song out of my head. :D

I went back and tried to look at some of the spoilers that Allnitething had posted from imdb.com. Some of them were wrong but it seemed like they were on the right track.

I thought it was good. I didn't think anything was going to happen to tony or his family. Although for a while there I thought AJ might bite the dust.

Carlo being a rat was kind of put out there a while ago, but it didn't seem like it would pan out. Not a big deal either way. The big things I knew were Sil outside the Bing, Bobby at a train store (though I read it was outside, w/his son there), Chris dying in a car accident and Phil at the gas station (actually heard it was the Ukrainian at the gas station, so I knew about that mix up too).

I guess I regret the Bobby/Chris/Sil stuff, but I don't really feel like I missed out. The show is just executed so amazingly that nothing can bring this show down for me. The repeat viewing satisfaction of the Sopranos is extraordinarily high with me.

i think there was more depth to the aj story than most here seem to have come away with. i think they focused on him to contrast his illness to tony's over the years. tony never stopped functioning. his depression was more of a function of his life choices, so each thing fueled the other.

that said, tho, i was getting tired of aj's whining and was glad tony kicked his ass last week. :D

Chris dying in a car accident

there's a little more to it than him simply dying as the result of an auto accident.

  • Interesting theory about the Sopranos

    Tony was killed....

in fact, the ending was genius if you've paid attention to the show or
    are
just a fan of well developed well thought out plots that all tie
    together
and have the memory of a champ to remember it all

the ending was simple, he got killed, but let me tell yall why and
    explain
in detail... There was 3 people in the room total who had a reason to
    kill
    tony.....

the two black guys, they were paid before to kill tony but he was only
    shot
in the ear, this was in one of the earlier seasons,

also in the earlier seasons, the trucker who was sitting at the bar
    stool,
who the camera kept focusing in on, is Nikki leotardo, Phil Leotardos
nephew, he was in one of the early season episodes where Phil and Tony
    have
    a sit down....

heres where the genius comes in....

When tonys walking in the diner, you see the camera focus on him, then it
switches to his perspective, and you see him looking @ the booth hes
    gonna
    sit at...

then the camera switches back to tonys face, then it once again switches
    to
his perspective, and it shows him looking @ the door and looking @ the
people come in..... Everytime the door opens the Chimes sound.......
Carmela walks in, Chimes, AJ walks in Chimes, this when Meadows parallel
parking, still trying to get inside the restaurant....

at this point the camera switches back to the trucker who goes in the
    bathroom......

Then it goes to a scene where meadow finally parks and starts running in
    the
    diner....

the doors about to open, Tony looks up....

    and No Chimes......................

    No Music............

    Everything just goes black...............

In one of the early episodes of the sopranos, tonys talking with bobby
    about
what it must feel like to die..

Bobby says "at the end, you probably dont hear anything, everything just
    goes black"

part of that was revisited in the second to last episode during the last
seconds of it, when tonys about to go to sleep and he flashes back to
    the
memory of him and bobby on the boat... "You probably dont hear anything
    everything just goes black"

so in the end, the Journey song was playing, the chimes on the door
    sounded
but when meadow came in, the guy in the trucker hat came out and killed
    tony...

its the reason you aint hear, or see shit when he died.... it was from
    his
perspective.... and everything went black, then the credits rolled

Everytime someone walked in the door it seemed like Tony reached for something in his lap...

But there are some holes in your theory. The "trucker" as you say is not sitting on the bar stool, he's sitting in the corner and you cant make out his face because of his hat. The “plain looking” guy sitting at the dinner stool looks over at Tony at least once... you're telling me Tony isn’t going to recognize him? And the black dudes? If the viewer is supposed to recognize them why didn’t Tony? The whole thing is stupid... he’s just going to sit there with his family as all these “threats” are in the dinner.

And BTW how did they all know he was going to be there. If you remember the scene with AJ and Camila it was a last minute change in the dinner plans. If you are going to kill him, kill him... if not then don’t. This whole "lights out" theory is a weak way to end a series... end a season, maybe but this was just weak writing like most of the last season and the short one before it.

I heard a TV critic on the radio today saying that the theories about Phil's nephew and the two black guys were not right. Supposedly HBO was saying they weren't the same characters. I can't verify any of that. Its just what this guy was saying on the radio.

I like the touch of them eating onion rings as opposed to some Italian food. The original family came from Italy. The generation that runs things now may keep some of the customs of The Old Country, but they really were "made in America" and Chase has tried to show this throughout the show's life. He has tried to show that basically they are the average American family that goes through some of the same old shit just with the mafia angle attached.

    Fucking Journey man.

it was season one and wasn't one of those black guys killed during the botched hit on tony?

edit: just watched that episode and one of them does get killed.

No shit. Did you even read my post? I was replying to what I heard previously regarding spoilers. You don't think hearing he dies in a car accident a couple months back is a spoiler? Oooooh, sorry I didn't say he was in an accident AND Tony chokes him. You know, I did hear that too, but didn't feel the need to post it. Sorry I didn't pass the tests of Captain Obvious over here.
