Yeah, classic movie, but it deviates from the book somewhat.

Like in the movie, Tommy was whacked because he whacked a made man. However, according to Henry Hill in his book, Paulie knew about it and kept it secret from the Gambino family until Tommy tried to rape Henry's wife, Karen. At that point, Paulie revealed to the Gambino family that Billy Batts was murdered by Tommy.

Tommy's attempted rape of Karen bothered Paulie because Paulie was banging her at the time. According to Henry Hill, John Gotti was the trigger-man in Tommy's execution.

..just in case that sort of stuff interests you.

Thanks for the info. I've watched that movie about . . . oh too many time to count. I'll get the book now, for a little light reading.

    Cheers!

Does anyone else find that, no matter how much they love this film, it starts to drag a bit near the end? After Tommy gets whacked it seems to lose momentum and I start to lose interest during the coke days. Maybe I've just seen it too many times.

    Cracking film though.

"Gangsters and Goodfellas" is the one written by Henry Hill. "Goodfellas" is just the book adaptation of the movie.

I thought the film was based on Wiseguy by Nicholas Pileggi?

Oh no I got that :D I mean he said something about a book called Goodfellas based on the film and I was wondering if he got confused with Wiseguy which is the book that the film was based on.

Yeah, the movie is based on the Nicholas Pileggi book 'Wiseguy', which reads just like Ray Liotta's narration if you want it to.. it's a very good read. It also, like most books do, contains a lot more information and cool scenes that you can picture almost clearly with the actors playing the rolls.

I didn't know Henry Hill wrote a book about it, I'll have to check that out too, but 'Wiseguy' owns just as much as the movie.

And to the person who said it drags a bit when Tommy gets whacked.. I will agree there. It's still good quality film, but the overall dynamic of the movie shifts and it gets a bit depressing. That's exactly how 'Casino' is for me when Ace meets Ginger for the first time and she starts fucking everything up.

You know, we always called each other goodfellas. Like, you'd say to somebody: "You're gonna like this guy; he's all right. He's a goodfella. He's one of us." You understand? We were goodfellas, wiseguys.

That was me too. Yeah, depressing is a good description. Once Hill's all coked up and fucking his life up and the main humour of the film (Tommy :D) is gone, it just starts to become heavy going, though still good.

Casino is a film I need to rewatch. I first saw it when I was WAY too young (about 10. my dad shouldn't have left his video's still in the VCR on saturday mornings after a night of taping :p) and the scene where Pesci and his brother get beaten with the baseball bats was just SO brutal. I couldn't even watch it. Sort of scared me away from watching it again even though I've seen much worse since.

Haha, 10 years old watching Casino! That's awesome, lol.. but yeah.. It's a really good movie, and had SO much potential to be another Goodfellas, but like Goodfellas, once everything starts getting fucked up the movie gets a bit boring, only in Casino it happens much sooner. Either way I still enjoy it quite a bit.
