Glad to see this thread still on page one.

There was a time when this thread rarely dropped out of sight.

PBM, you're damn lucky to have seen Lowlight. God, I LOVE that song. However, I do agree with you about the fact that it may not translate well live. I don't think anything beats the Gorge 05 version though.

    Jumping in all late:

I remember hearing on the radio that Pearl Jam was putting out a new record and that it was taking them back to their "rock roots." That was great news to me because being only 16, I had not really appreciated "No Code" yet and was eager for the good old Pearl Jam. A few months later, I found myself at Walmart fingering through the CDs and I accidentally found "Yield". I bought it never having ever heard a single and when I finally listened to it, it wasn't what I expected. Brain of J, kinda reminded me of Vitalogy so it was headed in the right direction. Then the rest of the songs started playing and I felt really confused. This wasn't the old Pearl Jam, but it did rock pretty hard. Yield was quite a curiosity, it was strange to me but I couldn't stop playing it. After maybe 6 months of listening to it, I realized I still had that No Code cd, and started listening to it and it was like an epiphany, I finally understood.

I will say that the Benaroya Hall version does the song justice...a better setting for that song.

I was going to say that, but I chose Gorge 05...but yes, you are absolutely right, Benaroya is a great setting for that song.

By the way, am I the only one who wants to see Pilate live?

I think we'd all like to see some of the rarer cuts of YIELD played at some point in time.

I think YIH has seen a majority of YIELD in some form in concert...he's only missing a few songs.

For only seeing four shows, I've been pretty fortunate...Brain of J, Faithfull, GTF, Wishlist, DTE, In Hiding. Considering I haven't seen Go, Daughter, or Small Town once, I consider it damn lucky.

BRAIN OF J and IN HIDING are hard to come by. Of course, a lot of those songs were more readily accessible during the '98 tour.

re what fanch said about faithfull, everyone likes it, when it comes to Brain OF J, and IN HIDING, most people that enjoy good rock like those tunes.
To try and elevate my discussion on this album, I have come to the conclusion that with No Code I kind of grew up in that era. But with YIELD I grew into a man, I was 26 when it came out, its no coincidence after GIVEN TO FLY, I became engaged, partyed the whole summer, wife got pregnant, there was alot of change going on back than. After about 2 yerars of this album everyday, baught a house and rebuilt it. YIELD has always been the album that put me into orbit as far as my connection with music and life. The last album that did this for me was 1984 from Van Halen. And I was young than.

    It's somewhat of a rite-of-passage album.

I can get on board with that.

I have to stand up and applaud anything that connects YIELD with Roth-era Van Halen. Well done.

I'm only 20, so I didn't really "grow up" with Pearl Jam as the band evolved, and I actually had heard many of the songs on Yield on live albums before I actually heard the studio versions. For me, Yield just represents the big transitioning point for the band, musically speaking. I felt like it was a middle ground, combining alot of things from the first 4 albums, and adding new things as well. No matter what my mood is, I can always put Yield in, and find a song that I can completely relate to. You don't find that very much.

YIELD was the climax...I'll give Binaural some due credit...but it's been spotty since '98.

Yeah, I'd agree with that. Binaural has some great tracks, as does Riot Act, but doesn't have the balance that Yield has. And I'd say Avocado has some good tracks as well, but musically the album isn't as diverse.

It's been a rather long refractory period, don't you think?
