I want to have a discussion about feeding the ducks. Getting a loaf of bread and whiling away a relaxing afternoon feeding our water resistant feathered friends. Im wondering, is this just an English tradition? It seems so to me. Anyone care to shed some light on this?

    Gawd no. Americans do it all the time. Hell, migratory birds no longer bother migrating around here because A. it is a lot warmer than it used to be, and B. why bother, they have 100,000 people feeding them all the time.

    i believe naturalists are really trying to discourage people from doing so for this very reason...screws with the birds desire to migrate...and they need to!



    that said, i remember many a saturday afternoon as a little girl, spent with my dad at the local pond....feeding the ducks......thanks for the reminder, the memory!

    People always feed the seagulls and then they are always dive bombing when your walking on the boardwalk. They have no fear of people.

    No, people feed them here too!

    I used to live in an apartment building and it had a pond with ducks. I used to feed them too, like the old ladies of the apartment building :D

    There were different kinds of ducks, they were not all your average kind of pond duck. One of those "specials" ducks always wagged its tail and if you threw a piece of bread on it, the piece was catapulted away.

    I'll feed the ducks ... when I'm away at a lake or something, not a lot, but yeah, they certianly have lost some of the fear for humans when they come and take bread out fo your hand.

    I have fond memories of feeding the ducks in the Englischer Garten in Munich last year, the day I spent there was so great ... well, except, I don't have fond memories of the swan that attacked me (unprovoked I might add).

    There's a guy on my street that always feeds the pigeons ... he's all grizzly looking, grey scraggly hair and beard ... has a headband ... I call him the pigeon messiah ... he's the jesus of pigeon feeders and they follow him everywhere, even if he doesn't have food for him.

    I'd choose a pigeon over a swan any day. So inhumane was the vendetta that former Mayor of London ken Livingstone launched against the pigeons, some of his quotes resembled nazi war-time propaganda, and the face fits the crime alright! I miss watching them waddle down the platform of Mile End tube, used to try and feed em' some of my daily twix.

    Ducks are cute little critters too, but I sense without a fixed memory that their over eager pursuit of my bread may have scared me when I was young. I've heard of council-led campaigns trying to stop people feeding the ducks as well.

    I used to have geese and they ate out of my hand too!

    They didn't really like other people, though :D

    I used to do that with my son so I don't think it's just an English thing. :)

    The ducks we fed would gobble up the food quick though! How do you make half a loaf of bread last a whole afternoon? ;)

    Are you supposed to feed ducks white bread?

    If it's bad for people, isn't it bad for them too?

    Or is the deal to use whole wheat now?

    You're aware that "feeding the ducks" is a euphemism, right harmless? :p:D

    Having acknowledged that and being delighted to discover that this really is a thread about feeding the ducks, I have to say it's one of my favorite things to do! I used to lived across from a park that had a duck pond and we would always take our stale bread and crusts over and feed them. I love watching them swimming about and diving to catch the bit that got away! And all the quacking! I've even got pics of me feeding the ducks in a little shopping courtyard by St Paul's Cathedral. :) So I'm an International Duck Feeder! :D

    I used to feed ducks and geese when I lived in Seattle. They come right up onto my lawn. I spent a whole box of Ritz, which I don't know if they have there. Do you have Doritos?
