Trimming Dog Nails

I need to get something new to trim my beagle's claws. I have a regular nail clipper for pets, but she hates it. I also worry about it hurting her.

Has anyone here tried the ones that have been advertised on TV lately like the Peticure or Pedipaws? If so, how has that worked for your pets?

I saw those on TV too. They look like they're worth trying out.

I never clipped my dog's paws back when I had a dog. I couldn't bring myself to it. I always took him to the pet store to have the groomers do it.

yea they look pretty good. i have only clipped my dog's nails twice. the second time i went too far and cut the quick. she was bleed for hours after. now i just take her to petco.

the TV advertising ones basically "files" off the nail rather than cut it off.

It's more safe for the pet, but it can be a wierd feeling on their toe if they're not use to it.

If you're going to go with the filing method, introduce it to them slowly or else they will probably not be very welcoming to it.

What ever you use.....try giving her some soft treats for each nail cut. I use Zuke's Tiny training treats, perfect size. I started doing this with my Petey right from the beginning when he was ten weeks old, and he doesn't mind getting his nails trimmed.

I would recommend against clipping.

Do as someone else suggested and file the nails down.

The vet that does my roommates dog uses a dremel like grinder to smooth them out.

we just pay 5 bucks at a local dog groomer to do it for us... i'm too scared that i'd cut too short - if you cut to short theres like a nerve or vein or something in their claws i think.

i remember one time my dead-beat uncle cut his dog's claws too short, and the poor dog bled everywehre and it wasn't until me and my other uncle came home to find bloody pawprints all over the garage that the dog actually got looked after. ever since then i'm too scared to cut my dog's.... you have to be very careful.

Larry's nails are sharp! He is a digger. lol
I refuse to cut them as I would never forgive myself if I hurt him.

My friend's wife bought that Peticure thing and I borrowed it a couple weeks ago. I normally clip and file my dog's nails, but she doesn't make it very easy on me (she's a Rottweiler and stubborn as all hell so as soon as I grab a paw she pulls it away and tucks it underneath her)...

I let her sniff the thing, and then I plugged it in so she could hear the noise. I didn't expect a problem since she lets me vacuum her with no problem

... Had a handful of treats and it went smooth as could be. Needless to say I'll be purchasing one for myself.

About how long does it take for each nail? Is it quick?

I have to try that.

I just had to take a tick off mine.

Someone should design a machine that will take ticks off like a vacuum. They have been bad here lately.

Yeah... I'll vaccum her from time to time. She really likes the Dustbuster for some reason.

And it took me about 5 seconds for each nail... might take a little longer depending on how long they are. The nail will heat up pretty good so you can't really grind it down all in one shot. I made a couple passes on each paw.

I am going to buy one of those things. Do you have to order them from the tv commerical number, or can you get them at Pets Mart, I wonder.

We have only one dog out of four that is reasonable when it comes to trimming nails. One of our dogs, who is normally the best natured dog in the world, pitches a fit when you try to trim his nails. The vet trimmed one too close one time many years ago, so that may have made him scared. We have to sedate him, muzzle him, and then wrestle with him. He will rebel against this thing too, but if we are patient and bribe him with biscuits I am hopeful it will work!!

I saw them at a store out here on the East coast called Harmon Discount Drugs.

I am thinking Larry will like this gizmo.

i just got one a couple of days ago. I havent used it yet, the only thing im scared of is, my dog might be afraid of the noise of the motor

I just saw it there.
So I imagine any drugstore would carry it, as well as the big box stores.

my grandma used to vacuum my dog... she runs when i turn it on to clean the basement...
my dog sheds like nobody's business, so i guess we're always trying to re-invent new anti-shedding techniques

I have been dying to try this. My dogs nails are so long(the quik is really long). My male fights me when I try to cut his nails, my female is fine but she doesn't like it. I can cut the white nails fine but once I get to the black ones I only take the tips. I don't like cutting them and I have to try this thing out. I am going to hit Walgreens this week sometime and see if they have one.

I don't have the light on it (but since I'm due to buy a new one, I just may get this one!)

Neither of my dogs "like" having their nails trimmed. They tolerate it...my youngest is a bit better at it than my oldest. I have venison jerky treats that I only use when trimming their nails. I sit on the floor, have the dog lay down in front of me between my feet then roll her on her side then on her back. Her shoulders are in my lap, head at my chest (they get belly rubs like this too). Trim the nails from there as you can see their paws up close. Much easier than standing in front of them or standing above them. After I'm done, they get the special treats while they're still lying on their back then more when they sit in front of me. I started training for trimming when they were at the most 12 weeks old. All you have to do when trimming is only take a small amount off....less than you think you need to....do it every 2-3 weeks, depending on how long their nails get and you'll get used to how much to trim.
