Is everywhere closing down, near where you live?

Don't you see it too: pubs that have been a staple of the community for years, suddenly closing for good and being replaced by yet another bland eating house, at very best, or just boarded up and left bare, otherwise? Shops in town where the rent is high, suddenly empty but with no sign of anyone taking it over? Things getting rundown without any town plan for regeneration around the corner?

And this is in a posher place, I'm talking about.

    It's a recession, folks. Anyone still euphemistically calling it a credit crunch sounds a bit like those people denying that Iraq was in a civil war, a year or so back.

    Yep! The West Village just isn't the same, 5 Marc Jacobs in a 2 block radius... Juicy Couture, Coach, Ralph Lauren, Tommy Hilfiger, Steve Madden etc etc all the little funky boutiques have gone and there's now a Starbucks on Hudson... not cool... don't even get me started on the Meat Packing District... grrrr...

    when i got here, there was a bar on every corner. now there's a closed bar on every corner.

    Yes, in Manhattan many of the local establishments have been forced to close due to sky fucking high rent..

    I am actually surprised that there are places opening up in my area. Granted some of these places are betting shops and corner stores . . . but they're new.

    I've noticed a lot of turnover. Small businesses getting replaced by other small businesses. It's pretty good where I live, there's always a protest when a Wal-Mart tries to build. :D

    I was just speaking about this to my carpool buddy this morning :( Everywhere I look, stores are closing down.
    It's affecting me in a major way at the moment, the guy I rent from is in the process of selling this place........he can't afford it anymore. Which means I have to find another place to live :(

    I haven't noticed... and even when I think of it, no, I don't think there are many places closing down :o lotsa sales on though... so perhaps we'll see closures shortly.

    It's technically a slow down, not a recession, but neither is very good. I don't see why people are complaining so much at the moment though, this is only the beginning. If house prices have been rocketing for so long it makes sense that there's got to be an equal downturn eventually. Fingers crossed by the time I get to house buying age in a few years house prices will be lower anyway. I can't see the fuel situation ever getting better though. I haven't really noticed any difference in retail. Only difference I've noticed is Camden is losing more and more record stores and replacing them with clothes shops. Doubt the credit crunch had much of a part to play in that though.
