I am in the beginning stages of getting my motercycle license and am looking to get a Harley Davidson ( The Only Bike ) Sportster or Dyna Glide. I have been looking into getting a bike for some time now and feel at this point in my life, it is time to venture into that era. I have always believed that life is too short to not do the things that you dream about. My family has a lot of bike owners and would like to join the club at some point. Please feel free to share thoughts, experiences, and ideas here. I have NEVER seen a thread on AET that discusses this topic and am lookin forward to your responses.

forget the harleys they are for bankers and people who play magic cards :-P if i was to get a cruiser it would definitely be a japanese built bike. for the same price, if not cheaper, you get something you dont or never use to with a harley, reliability! like i said im not sure about new ones but the old ones where terrible for reliability. i will never ride a HD!
being young and not wanting a cruiser at this point, i went with what i think is the best of both worlds. i wanted fast and stylish without gimping my back after a hour of riding. the yamaha FZ6 has the R6 motor/tranny with a up-right riding position. had it for 3 years now and still love it. might trade it in next year or the year after though just for a change.

Harley Davidson UNreliable? Thats a new one for me considering I have NEVER seen a broken down HD. They seem to me to be the most reliable ,AND they are american made. I dont know how it is in canada, but here in america we like to buy american made items to keep our economy strong. That is why I dont shop at the Walmarts of the world and things of that nature. I cant wait to buy that American Classic HD and stick it up Hondas Ass..lol*Marker in the Sand Fanclub * HNIC

Loud motorcycles are so utterly obnoxious....(not that all Harleys are)
Some bikes are so loud wish a huge foot would come out of the sky and just stomp em...
Rice burner FTW! Gimme that Formula 1 sound any day
 It's like

It is best to start off simple and work your way up to bigger and nicer bikes. Start off with a chain-driven bike (used and cheap) that is around or under 500cc. Most new riders will probably lay their bike down once or twice (this could be as simple as dropping it in a garage). It would be a pity to do that to a Harley.
Basically, as your experiance grows, you can trade up to newer bikes. My buddy started off with a brand new 1,100 cc Buel a few years ago, and wrecked it within 3 days.
Also, remember this: There are two kinds of motorcycle riders. Those that have gone down, and those that are gonna.Be Excellent To Each OtherParty On, Dudes!0

 EXACTLY!
It's not a matter of "IF" you go down, it's a matter of "WHEN" you go down.
 There's a reason I dont have a bike; I choose life.

Just because you own a motorcycle does not mean that you are going to kill yourself. That is why you shouldnt buy a bike when your 16, the later in life the better.*Marker in the Sand Fanclub * HNIC

yes sir you read that correctly. hd's had, and i use the word had because only time will tell with new ones, a bad name for reliability. if you dont know this you dont know much about the history of harley. since the late 60's they where known as junk due to amf and have been trying to make a comeback since ownership changed again in the 80's. you say about them being american built? what about the outsourced parts that makes up a harley? how about the japanese carbs they use to use in the 70's/80's? how about the porsche designed v-rod motor, probably the best hd to date!
people think hd sells or means quality, but really the only thing they sell is image. if you are happy to pay for a lesser product, power to you. This post is © by gfraser0

Yikes! I hope not. I've had a bike since 1990 and I haven't been down yet. But, yeah, it's always a possibility.
Harley Davidson: the most efficient way to turn gasoline into noise, without the by-product of horsepower!

I've spent some time riding passanger on the back of a sportbike. If I had a choice of what to ride, it would be a harley or atleast a cruiser style bike. They are much more comfortable, and generally designed for the journey not getting off the line
Whatever you do, just please be very careful. One of my best friends was killed about 7 years ago in a motorcycle accident that was NOT his fault.
He would have been 30 on the 25th of may. He is still sorely missed.0

So sorry about your friend . .
On our way to LA for EV, a guy passed us on the 210. He was splitting lanes and his poor gf was perched on the back of his rice burner. I looked over at my wife and asked "what do you think her heartrate is, right about now?" If I had known then what I know now... If I had known then what I know now...
