Sux to have to work Friday after Thanksgiving?

edited November 2008 in All Encompassing Trip
This is the first year in 5 that I have to work this Friday. My boss is having 20 people at his house on Thursday, so we are leaving a little early today (at about 3pm) and have to work from 8:30 to 12 Friday. I must say, this sux. The only good thing about it is that I get the Friday after Christmas off. And we had to fight for that.

So if you live in the northeast try not to come to my office 11/28, we will all be crabby and pissy and take it out on all the patients ;)!!! I'm kidding, but still not happy:(.

Ok, after reading my post, I have changed my state of mind, will stop complaining and be THANKFUL I have a job in the first place:)!
Thank you fellow 10 clubber for saving my ass....again!!!

The state of NJ decided last year that Black Friday would no longer be a holiday because a lot of people might want to get state business done on that day  Fine...but I work at a college and ALL of the students leave for the weekend - which means anyone who does work sits around and does absolutely nothing. We just need to have minimal office coverage and most people have taken a vacation day (including myself). Some people have opted to work - which is a relief for me! Today the college closes early - nice - but :conufsed: about Friday

There are four of us in the office, I think the two older women may leave at lunchtime but I assist the doc so I have to be there. I also didn't mention we do get paid for the whole day today and Friday. So I am still looking on the bright side! I will just be a little slow and sorta hung the day after Thanksgiving, it just going to be a given.

It sucks to have to come to work, but I did it last year and it wasn't all that bad. No one does shit, take a very long lunch and usually end up leaving early.

I don't have to work on Friday, but I remember when I had to (old job) and it was the WORST!
Your alarm goes off, you still in a food coma with lots of wine on top and you have to get out of bed? Fuck that!

I'll be sleeping in this Friday and it's going to be awesome.

I feel sorry for the people who have to work in those stores that are opening at 5am on Black Friday.

My son and I are watching all the commercials to see what ridiculous hours some stores are opening at this year.

We will be sleeping of course, but we find it amusing to see what the retailers are doing. :D

we get to leave the office 2 hours early xmas eve and NYE....but we get the day after xmas and the day after new years day as company holidays.....so 2, 4 day weekends in a row.

    lucky, we are. :)
    love it!

now, for years i taught so always had plenty of time off, but i also worked retail, so really...still always worked during a lot of the holidays in any case but not nearly the craziness some people in retail do. i always managed to work in really high-end shops, thus no crazy-sick hours, ever. however.....i LOVE having a regular M-F gig nowadays, and all the holidays, generous vacation, etc.....it's all good.

poor hubby has to work the day after each of the holidays tho. :( however, he too finally has a regular M-F gig, same hours as me....so it's still all good. and sure, i can wrap his gifts day after thanksgiving. :p

    Cool.

The thing I like best about having company holidays on Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve (or the days after in your case) is you can take a two week vacation while using up only 6 vacation days.

    indeed!
a LOT of people at my firm do that very thing. however, i do not. my husband can never get extra time off during the holidays...so it just seems a waste of vacation days. i fully enjoy the 4 day weekends - we had the same last year - and work is dead so i get paid for not doing much in any case. however, THIS year we did take next week off. :D sure, hubby still has to go into work this friday, but otherwise for me....11 straight days off.....and using 5 vacation days.....not too shabby. this week has been a whole lotta nothing as well. all of november/december is like this, and my posts correlate ;)....come january things will pick up. for now, just completely blissful!

Fitness instructor here - the day after a Thanksgiving is a BIG day for working out! I'll be teaching, and we're holding an extra class too, to deal with the larger amount of people.

I had never heard of people working the day after Thanksgiving (except for retail/food service) before last year--there was a thread on the message pit. Before that I thought everyone got the day off as a public holiday.

actually, a LOT of careers have ALWAYS worked 24/7....365 days a year. workers in hospitals, police officers, any form of transportation and all involved employees, numerous service industries....gas station attendants and the like, etc. really....only office/education workers were the 'norm' for being off.

Oh, yep! That's what I meant, for office workers and such. It sounded like the OP worked in an office? I was just surprised as I hadn't heard of offices being open the day after Thanksgiving.

i think in our lovely information age, sadly one of the 'perks' of information availalbe 24/7....365.....is more and more 'office workers' do indeed, work such days. most especially those in IT depts i imagine.
