  • Part of being a fan is having an emotional investment in a team that represents you or your city. How can you possibly do that in racing? It's one dude who works for a company who is sponsored by many companies. How can there be any emotional investment as a fan other than you like the guy in a way that's pretty much like pro wrestling. It's just weird.

I go for the cute guy that says he likes Pearl Jam... even if he's a right wing-type freak. :)

    Hahaha, nice.

And you cannot compare baseball to NASCAR, but I understand your point.

No offense ;)..When I worked as an auto tech and received my BA in automotive technology I used to love Nascar and would root every weekend for my boy Rusty....It's not just about going fast and turning left..lol...oh man, there is so much good stuff going on under the hood..but yeah I'm a man and enjoy working on stuff like that, but definitely don't expect everyone to understand....but anyway, who gives a fuck right?

    NASCAR sucks.

Anyone ever think of how much gas is wasted in NASCAR? We try to conserve gas, and be better for the environment, then along come a bunch of people from north carolina racing in circles for hours. Its like a marathon thats wastes alot of resources.

I dont know, just a thought that occurred to me recently.

I have a theory that NASCAR is why Pearl Jam won't play the south.

    I'm just sayin'...

Soccer is similar to me as NASCAR is to you. I just don't get it nor am I interested in investing any more time trying to figure it out. It's just not that exciting to me.

That I've watched but don't understand. I do respect that sport though. Those cars are damn near jet fighter.

A big part is the technology in the cars
    the locales-truly a world championship
the tracks-some of the grandstands are spectacular
    the strategy-more

We are talking about ferraris, BMW and mercedes top of the line race cars.
There is aerospace grade technology (NASA) grade, and then there is F1 grade, a step above.

    Amazing stuff.

I will say that the lack of passing can make it a bit boring at times

  • Funny how drivers are called rednecks when drivers like Ryan Newman have mechanical engineering degrees from Purdue. Also, a lot of the "necks" that build the cars also have engineering degrees.

    But they're all hillbillies.

  • if i want to see a bunch of monte carlos racin around i just go up to illinois/wisconsin border. i heard once that watching a whole nascar race sober will kill three million brain cells, and those don't come back.

  • HOLY shit. this thread is really just a big ol' ball of ignorance.

first of all. doesn't count for WHAT? what are the qualifiers? did you not grow up watching Nascar, therefore it doesn't "count" to YOU?? many people enjoy the sport. It IS a sport, and it IS fascinating.

the concept that it's all jug-band style trashy people that are ignorant is itself IGNORANT and stereotypical. Only "right wingers' like Nascar?

every Nascar fan lives in a trailer? bullshit.

would NFL "count"?? isnt the fanbase just a bunch of former fratties getting drunk and watching men with oversized pituitaries battle it out?

    please.

I suppose ALL pearl Jam fans believe and act in the same fashion...do they "count" as a musical interest?? "oh grunge heads" ?!?

by the way, the demographics of the fanbase for Nascar has changed a LOT over the years. get a clue about something before you start a thread trashing it.

  • My interest in NASCAR has certainly waned since Dale Sr.'s death, but this little story might give you an idea of just how much it does matter....or count as the OP put it
I don't believe it would be a huge leap to say, with 99.9% certainty, that NASCAR matters a lot more than the NHL

    December 2005

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — NASCAR announced its new 2007 television contracts on Wednesday, deals which solidify its position as the No. 2 television sport behind National Football League games.

Under the new eight-year agreements, NASCAR races will be broadcast on a combination of networks that includes Fox, Speed, Turner's TNT, and ABC/ESPN beginning in 2007, according to NASCAR.com.

Notably absent from the new deal was NBC. The Wall Street Journal reported that NBC has lost money on its current NASCAR contract and now has "the high cost of NFL on Sunday nights."

The Journal said the new contracts are valued at about $4.5 billion or $560 million a year, up from current deals totaling $2.4 billion over six years or $400 million a year.

What this means to you: Coming soon to a lot of stations near you! NASCAR continues to rev up its clout among advertisers and entertainment outlets, positioning itself for even greater growth.
