TALLAHASSEE - Citing a growing body of evidence about long lines at polling sites, Gov. Charlie Crist on Tuesday ordered an extension of early voting hours effective through the end of early voting Sunday.

"I want to ensure maximum number of citizens can participate in our electoral process," the governor said.

The order took effect Tuesday night and requires polling sites to remain open 12 hours a day -- from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. in all 67 counties through Friday -- to accommodate a record turnout that has already exceeded 1.2 million early voters.

Crist's executive order also calls for polling sites to be open a total of 12 hours between 7 a.m. on Saturday and 7 p.m. on Sunday when early voting ends.

Governor orders extension of early voting hours

With the crunch of new voters in FL this is a great idea.

Agreed. While we all know McCain will win Florida, this could be vitally important to all of the local, congressional, etc. elections in the state.

    Good move.

I don't know why you would think McCain will win Florida? Unless it's already fixed for him to win, I'm not hearing a lot of people here saying they will be voting for him. A lot of people are getting absentee ballots just to make sure their vote is counted this time.

Even here in DC my boss voted absentee ballot for Obama and her husband. They surprised the hell out of me considering how wealthy they're and how much they will be taxed by an Obama administration.

They were shocked to find out I'm voting for Nader. People are waiting in line 2-4 hours in line so get out and vote people...EARLY THAT IS!

you KNOW McCain will win Florida? Really?

    intersting. I don't know that ...

I'll be honest, I think Obama has a better shot at Florida than Ohio ...

check out the historical polls in Florida ...

not many for McCain, and the ones that are, are pretty slim margins.

I'm not saying McCain CAN'T win Florida, but it's far from decided for either candidate.

btw ... Pres Clinton and Obama campaigning together in Florida today ... making a big push there .... to me, it appears to be Pennsylvania insurance.
