Question for US voters

I just want to ask a question of voters here. I've been voting a long, long time and don't really understand the lines I've been reading/hearing about. I've been voting absentee/by mail for years and it is very convenient and easy. Washington state is almost 100% vote by mail now. Why don't more do this?
I could google by state, but thought I'd just ask the opinions of those here.
I posted this question in another thread but didn't get much response so as I really want an answer I thought I'd make a thread. :)

I like to go to the polls for nostalgic sake. I remember always going with my dad as a kid when there were curtain booths with levers and buttons. Now it's all high tech or extremely low tech.

Funny, I just talked to my mom tonight and she said that her and dad both now vote by absentee.

I voted absentee. A week ago. Just had to go to the courthouse- it took all of 10 minutes.

voting should be easier in this country. Maybe have the election on a Saturday when most people aren't working. Have it all on paper. In Canada they have results in 1 hour, and its all done by paper. Canada is one of the biggest countries in the world, in terms of land, and they have election results from a pencil/paper type voting system in 1 hour-its not that hard. we use paperless voting machines and have 6 hour voting lines...its rediculous. its as if they are discouraging us to vote.

I really did enjoy going to the polling booths, but when the laws changed and it was so easy and convenient to vote by mail, I just went with it. What I am truly trying to find out is if absentee isn't available in all states or if people are apposed to it or don't like it for some reason. :)

I voted a week ago too. I also agree that voting should be easier and shouldn't be hassle. That's why I asked the question why more don't vote via absentee/vote by mail. :)

What is the deal with those voting machines? I have never figured out any reason why people in the US have to pull the lever, or knock out the chad or that type of stuff. Why can't they just do X in a box on a piece of paper? Although some Canadian elections have been semi-automatic. Rather than doing X in a box hand counted, it is a ballot where you draw a black like for the candidate of your choice and instead of putting the ballot in a box it gets scanned in a machine and counted.

The other nice thing about Canadian elections is they don't start releasing the results until all the polls country-wide are closed. That way east coast results can’t influence west coast voters.

Floida has paper ballots now, thank goodness. I waited 20 min. in line this morning. Very pleasant.

I choose not to vote until the 4th becaes I want as much info as possible, but many of my friends and clients choose absentee ballots.

That's how voting is done here in Chicago. Fill in the black arrow, put the ballot in a scanner. I went this morning, and even with a line I was only there for 20 minutes and was still early for work.
I've heard of other places that do electronic voting. I'll have to ask my friends and family from different states what they had to do.

I dont think I would trust sending in my ballet by mail. In the past 6 months I have lost a lot of important mail in transit.

Do they have a way to make sure it is not lost in transit?
Maybe if they did a website to vote on as another option, I mean you can sign up for the draft online, or get a credit card.

Either way, and I might just be paranoid after 2000, whatever other options are explored, avoid voter fraud needs to be explored with it.

Oh and whoever said voting on Saturday, that would be an awesome idea. However, isn't that the Jewish holy day? and some Jewish people do practically nothing that day.

i've voted absentee since my first election in 1988....you can take your time and apparently this year, no lines :o:)
  • For some reason there is a greater satisfaction for me going to the polls and actually pulling the lever for who I want to vote for.

I was out of state for work in 2004, so I did vote absentee then and it was nice to sit down with the ballot and read about different local candidates online while I was voting. But checking boxes and mailing in a form just didn't feel like "voting" to me.

My county in WA votes by mail only. Received my ballot in the mail Oct 15th.
I filled mine out that day and took it over to the courthouse. Made sure it was safely deposited in the drop box. It felt like I was part of a historic event. I can't wait for the results tonight. I can hardly suppress some serious giddiness!

perhaps b/c most of us don't know how? :o
i always assumed to voted 'absentee' you actually DID have to be absent from your voting place, not just choose to do so b/c you feel like it. as far as i know, in NY, there IS no early voting, vote by mail, etc....except for the absentee ballot. so i just don't think all states offer all these options.

if we did have these options, i'd be all for it....and would more than likely do mail-in, or at least early voting.

and i keep reading how people get these 'i voted' stickers, and can then get a free cup of joe at starbucks...or a free scoop of ice cream at ben & jerry's...and i think that's so awesome! :p however, all my years of voting, i have never gotten an 'i voted' sticker....:( perhaps this year WILL be different, in more ways than one. :)
    Stay with me...
